Need help about disclosing death to elderly

Hi. My sister just died. Police and Ambos came and left. I'm a 4hr drive away. My grandma's going to wake up soon to me and my husband being there and will know something is up. Mum is also at risk at dying of a broken heart or suiciding. How do I/we tell grandma about the death without turning into a double or triple fatality? Really need help now if anyone's out therem thdnk you

Re: Need help about disclosing death to elderly

Hi @jayskette, I’m so sorry for the loss of your sister. This sounds incredibly shocking and overwhelming, especially having to think about telling your grandma while you’re also worried about your mum.

Given what you’ve shared about your mum potentially being at risk of suicide, please don’t feel you have to manage this on your own. If you believe she may be in immediate danger, please call 000 or have someone with her contact emergency services. Lifeline is also available 24/7 on 13 11 14.

For your grandma, if possible, you might consider having someone with her when you tell her and making sure she isn’t left alone afterwards. You can keep the conversation simple and give her time to process the news.

Please take care of yourself too. You’ve just experienced an enormous loss, and it’s okay to lean on the people around you right now 💛

Hello @jayskette

Really sorry for your loss. This is not an easy thing to do or experience. Break it gently to both of them but they both need to have someone with them afterwards. Please call an ambulance for either of them should they require one. Once again sorry for this heavy loss and may your sister rest in peace. Sending many hugs.

Thank you for the replies I appreciate it a lot. Unfortunately now we are all in hospital from the severe trauma. I'm a bit scared because the paramedics agreed with what I thought might happen so at least she's in good hands now
