Intense Cumulative Grief After A Breakup

Intense Cumulative Grief After A Breakup

I’m experiencing very intense grief after a breakup, which my grief counsellor believes is cumulative grief and connected to the passing of my Dad 8 months earlier. If you’re not familiar, the overall idea of cumulative grief is that it reopens the wounds of previous losses, so it’s like a layered combination of all your previous grief. It’s the first time I’ve experienced this and it’s honestly hit me in a way I never could have anticipated. I think the first two weeks after the break up I was functioning purely in a state of numb shock. By the third week though, this had become proper grief and very strong depression. It seems to have gradually gotten progressively worse as time goes on. It’s been 2 months since the break up and some days I really struggle to get out of bed and can only motivate myself to do the bare minimum of showering and eating. To make this worse, I find myself criticizing myself for not coping well enough, despite the fact that I know I’m going through a hard time and should be kinder to myself. I have a grief counsellor and psychologist for support, but no close friends or family nearby. The hardest part is that I felt I’d spent 8 months after my Dad died gradually getting better and now I feel worse than ever. Unfortunately I think it’s something that’s going to take quite a long time to recover from. One of the other hardest parts is going through something like cumulative grief and not having other people you know who are also going through it. So are there other people on here who have experienced or are currently experiencing cumulative grief? I’m not expecting any quick fix magic solutions, but I mostly just want to know I’m not alone in feeling this way.

Dear @AutumnLeaves_86 ,

Welcome to the forums. You are definitely not alone in feeling this cumulative grief. Grief can hit anyone at any time, and there is no timeline for when the grief "finishes" or "ends".

I hear how hard it is sometimes just to get out of bed an function.

I hope you find a way to celebrate the life of your loved one, and use that to help you move forward.

If you are interested, you may want to have a look at some resources or access some support through SANE's RecoveryClub here: https://www.sane.org/recovery-club

We look forward to hearing from you.

Hi @AutumnLeaves_86

Cumulative grief is a lot for anyone to go through. It makes complete sense to be struggling as much as you are. It’s great that you have the support of your grief counsellor and psychologist. Would you be interested in attending a support group? It might help to meet with people who are going through the same thing you are. Getting out of bed is a huge accomplishment. Please be kind to yourself even though it’s hard. You’re doing the best you can and there is no timeline for recovery from grief. You are not alone. This community is here to support you.

Hello@AutumnLeaves_86

Sorry to hear that you are going through a hard time. Losing someone significant in your life is not easy and difficult to process. I think it's normal to feel depressed even though it's not a nice feeling. It takes a long time to process any sort of loss. Keep your self distracted watch something constructive or funny on YouTube. I haven't experienced cumulative loss but I have experienced loss and it still affects me. You might find this app useful it's called my grief and you can access it through your app store.

Re: Intense Cumulative Grief After A Breakup

I am going through something similar. I left my relationship in November after giving up. Poured everything I had into trying to “fix the man” and although there was a lot of love there, my needs weren’t met. It’s the first relationship I’ve left that wasn’t because of something terrible the other had done.

I moved interstate and had been numbing out/in survival mode for the last 9 months just trying to get by with virtually no local supports. Although we attempted to stay in touch and remain friends, his actions post-breakup eventually led to me having to give up on the idea of staying friends, and I abruptly went no-contact with him after finding out some stuff that triggered old wounds.

what I experienced immediately following this was a huge wave of grief that crippled me and triggered my chronic condition to the point where I could no longer care for myself and I was admitted to hospital. I was off work for 3 weeks and the grief of the relationship seemed to morph in and out of immense grief for my entire life, and all of my losses came to visit at my lowest. Something about when I sob so hard, it makes me think of/puts me back into the other times I’ve cried that hard (primarily when my sister died when I was 15). It’s so hard to move on from this feeling when it feels like I am consumed with old wounds.

I am on the mend now with the help of some psychiatric meds to quell the ruminations and meta-worry, and I’ve started EMDR and IFS therapy to begin reprocessing some of the trauma.

Just wanted to say I understand what you’re going through, and that you won’t be in the hole forever. Supports can come in lots of forms (friends, family, professionals) and we can build them up slowly. The most important thing is that you don’t have to pull yourself out of the hole alone. Be brave, ask for help because you deserve it. Love and light ❤️‍🩹
