Feeling Lost

Feeling Lost

I have an adult son who has undiagnosed mental illness/ depression. We've been to psychologists and they can't help him. Does anyone know how to get into a psychiatrist in Perth that doesn't take 12 months to get a diagnosis so we can get further assistance from the government? We keep sending off referrals and keep getting knocked back.

Good morning @Welley72

Welcome to the SANE forums. It's great that you are reaching out for support today. I'm sure others in the community will jump in to welcome you and offer some support.

I hear that you are feeling lost and frustrated. It can be really challenging finding the right support.

It sounds like you have tried the pathways we usually suggest such as a GP and referrals to specialists such as psychiatrists and psychologists. Failing those pathways I wonder if you have tried local community services that might be available. Ask Izzy is a useful search engine that might provide some options you haven't explored.

The community mental health service through the hospital might be an idea as well.

SANE has a program called the Recovery Club. Perhaps you might like to sign up for that and take advantage of the one-on-one sessions to have a chat with a facilitator and maybe brainstorm some ideas. You can use the sessions to discuss whatever you need with someone who will hold space for you and listen. Here is the link to the information and registration page: Welcome to SANE’s Recovery Club

Thank you for showing up and sharing openly and honestly. We are glad you're here with us.

Hang in there, you're not alone.

Sending you all my best this morning.

HhXx

Re: Feeling Lost

Hello @Welley72,

Sorry to hear that you have had a difficult time getting your son diagnosed. I can recommend Dokotela they have psychiatrists and psychologists you can access them online anywhere from Australia.I have used them for my diagnosis. I recommend writing down everything that your son has been experiencing. The more info the better. You will need a referral from a GP. Once you have sent the referral, ask them which psychiatrist they recommend for your son to see as there are so many and not all are the same. Best of luck.
