Breaking up with someone who can't accept it's over

Breaking up with someone who can't accept it's over

Without getting into the insanity of everything that has happened since I told my partner of 8 years I was done, I was hoping people have some advice.

I am beyond burnt out from our relationship; they recently had a borderline/bipolar diagnosis which fits (and is what I have been saying for years) and I can't keep up with the rollercoaster myself, so I can't explain it all to you!

Long story short, my kids, dogs and I moved in to my sisters as I couldn't handle the constant barrage of begging me to stay or telling me how awful I am for wanting to leave and take my equity with me.

I still get at least 5 emails a day from them, ranging from info for our settlement, apologetic, sentimental begging me to return, or pissy rages at how I abandoned them when they need me most. It's full of gaslighting, it feels like they are just trying to wear me down into coming back.

I have blocked them by text and messenger.

I have their emails sent to a separate folder, so i can read them when I feel I have capacity, but I DO need to check them in case it's about our settlement or my belongings (which are still in our home), and honestly, I won't have capacity/a calm central nervous until I can sever ties from them (i.e. property settlement) and have some room to breathe, therapy to heal. So reading them sets me into a very anxious state about 70% of the time.

Today, they rocked up at my work and handed me a giant bunch of flowers, then left. I'm super shaken up by it; I wasn't scared, it's just that I am at a point where any communication makes me feel sick, because of the following cycle:

No matter what I do or say, they keep begging me to try again. I have told them so many times it's not possible, I have no desire to, and that them ignoring me is extremely insulting and creepy.

They then get hurt, which makes them turn vindictive/mean, then they feel guilty and apologise, then they are super friendly (buying flowers, offering to walk my dogs, take me for a spin in their new EV) and the cycle continues.

I don't even know what to do any more. Largely I don't respond to anything emotional, just logistics, and eventually they start including emotional responses which I ignore, then that sets them off as well.

Settlement is at least a few months away.

Hi 👋🏼 @JustWhelmed I really feel for you. You can’t even get space to breathe at work.

If you have been on this Merry Go Round repeatedly, have you taken action to indicate to your estranged partner, that this separation is permanent?

Do you have some support?

Hi @JustWhelmed

Sound like an extremely difficult situation to be in. It’s great you have been able to set some boundaries by blocking them and keeping their emails separate. Make sure you’re looking after yourself. That cycle is clearly very toxic. Please remember that you deserve so much better. I hope that you can sever ties with them soon so you can move on with your life and finally feel regulated.

Thank you both for your support. I have a counsellor via Carers SA which has been good, although mostly chatty outrage at everything that's happening.

My ex took my son for a ride in their new EV on Sunday (which is very flash) and when dropping him home, asked if we could go for a drive and a chat. The conversation was rational, what I would call "normal, kind, fair", that they loved me a lot, understood how hard the 8 years have been, and didn't want to ruin me. That the mortgage is now paid off and they were glad to give me some space financially. I have started applying for rentals as I now don't have to worry about the mortgage, right?

I said there was no chance of us getting back together, and they were sad but accepting.

They then sent me a long email begging me to return and that things would be different, they were committed to their mental health (now they are on new meds and having better therapies) to which I didn't respond. They also wanted me to attend family court (child custody with their ex who is a nightmare) and I emailed today to say I can't as I don't have leave (need it for my kids!).

Suddenly, the mortgage ISN'T paid off, and when I asked for confirmation that I would need to pay my half, they said I need to speak to my lawyer (which I don't yet have).

WHEN WILL I LEARN TO NOT TRUST ANYTHING THEY SAY!

I'm so disheartened, I was excited to at least apply for rentals (I'm sure it will take months to get lucky) so we aren't living on top of my sisters family/home, and I could have some time to start to heal. What a disaster.

Hey @JustWhelmed, I just wanted to jump in here. It sounds like you’ve had such a disappointing turn of events, especially after feeling hopeful about being able to move forward with finding your own place. I can understand why you’re feeling so disheartened after having that hope taken away again.

I’m glad you have your counsellor through Carers SA to support you through everything that’s happening too.

Just a little reminder that when you’re replying to another member, it’s helpful to tag them by using @ followed by their username. That way they’ll receive a notification that you’ve replied to them 😊
