Natural prescriptions

Natural prescriptions

Hello everyone

I took a hiatus from this for a while to consolidate and to work out where to from here. I know I belong and would like to make it a better world from the sham mediocrity I have personally been involved in against my will.

I would be interested to know from others your thoughts about what I have come up with. I am in talks with a not for profit to offer my lived experience to convene a support group of "revolving door" ex clients of community mental health. It could be mental health related but not required so anyone can join. I personally want to meet others with bipolar and AuHD.

So it was going to be art in a space which will be provided by the nfp. Arts in Recovery is one group which is funded by a PHN [edited by moderator] and with support from OTs at the University of Newcastle.

Then I heard a radio programme about natural prescriptions. Access and motivation are the drivers. You could have one, two, both or neither. As a person who has struggled with motivation, having a "social prescription" is needed.

I have had psychiatrists undermine me for an interest in natural therapies and have tried to brand me non-compliant which is false but is it such a revolutionary concept to engage in nature and be prescribed by your peers (and lived experience) to self-care.

I was always interested in radical self-compassion. Now I would like to start to write grants with the support of the nfp and be remunerated for my time as I am studying a Certificate IV in Mental Health (Peer Work).

I would be open to collaborate, share ideas, be proved wrong that there is a genuine need for this.

The local Medicare Mental Health Centre closed down this week in my area, which does not affect me personally because they rejected my referral but to others I imagine this is a blow. Another peak body is investigating.

I hope I have started a conversation. I look forward to constructive criticism!

Re: Natural prescriptions

Hi @Sequester ,

I look forward to hearing insights from the community.

Just a slight note that we've edited out the PHNs as it may compromise anonymity. This is in line with Staying Anonymous (https://saneforums.org/articles/community-guidelines)

Re: Natural prescriptions

Thanks @BAO

I always welcome feedback and I really appreciate your support. I have listed a post from someone who was personal (one user on another discussion group) as a flag with SANE Australia so I will be logging off until I feel safe enough to express my lived experience online. Sorry to say that that means I cannot read all the encouraging ideas about prescriptions for social and natural self-care but if anyone believes in this idea I support their doing this in their communities.

Re: Natural prescriptions

@Sequester I vaguely heard about social prescribing about 8 years ago, thought it was great idea, but not seen it put to use where needed. I'd even like to see more Social & Cultural Psychiatry being discussed. Kind of a give away that big Pharma has the upper hand.

@Appleblossom So true. I'm leaving this forum permanently. That's it from me. I wish you well.
