Welcome and getting started

Another hard day

Another hard day

Last Saturday my car was sideswiped by another car, going in for repair soon. 2 days ago I cleaned 2 homes as a individual support worker and results were both complained about lack of cleaning abilities at houses. Today I was caught smoking out the front of clients house by the owner of the business I work for, totally belittling me about this mistake and the mistakes I made the day before, what a failure I feel right now she had reduced me to tears while she was running me down over the mistakes I've made. I missed so many meals over this job as we are given an half an hour to go from 1 client to the other with no meal break. I rang my job provider earlier who gave me great support and listened but has another appointment @ 3pm so couldn't ring my boss today, she's ringing her tommorrow to have a chat with her. I like the clients and this job but if the shittiness keeps up I will resign, even though I'm 66 years young I'm sure there would be another employer out there to take me on I'm even considering volounteering. It's now 3pm I'm going to have some lunch finally. My job provider said not to stress I have you all to listen and advise me as well so any positive talk would be welcomed

Hi @Spitfire1

It sounds like there's been a lot happening for you with your car 🚘being side swiped, and getting some not so nice complaints from clients, and business owners about your abilities. I can hear how upsetting and belittling this has felt and it's understandable it resulted in tears🥹. Everyone makes mistakes and that's okay. It doesn't mean you are a failure and in fact it can be an opportunity for learning and growth. How we are given feedback is important too and it sounds as if the way it was delivered could have been a lot more supportive. It's great you were able to find this type of support from your job provider who did listen🦋. I can hear you are keeping your options open and thinking about what else you could do if things continue to feel not so great in your current job - that sounds wise🦉🪶.Being treated with respect if important hey! It's great to see you reaching out here for support too ✨.Your thoughts and feelings are important 🪷.

Take Care

Re: Another hard day

Still not a good shift but got through it I didn't realise individual support would so exhausting. Would anyone know why a person would have circles around the top part of the nose near the eyes commonly known as 'panda eyes' I think that what's it called. One good thing today I learnt how to make/bake banana bread in bread oven. I bought bread oven through op shop 2 years ago cheap, works perfectly fine, love the smell of baking bread I know a lot of people on here would be financially struggling I feel that this oven was a deal I couldn't go past. Client today has dementia she became cranky thru the shift as I felt this was my fault I trimmed her fingernails cut 1 a little short it bled then an hour later she had a podiatry visit that wasn't my fault client became distressed as she thought I think podiastrist was to hurt her associating the 2 with hurt, I reassured her but I don't think it worked. Yes I am learning big time from my mistakes every single day, thought of resigning yet again today.

Hi @Spitfire1 👋

Thanks for popping back and letting us know how things went.

It sounds like it was still a tough shift, but I'm hearing that despite everything, you got through it. Individual support work can be physically and emotionally demanding, especially when you are still finding your feet and learning new things each day.

I can see how upsetting it would have been when your client became distressed after the nail trimming and before the podiatry visit. From what you have shared, it sounds like you did your best to reassure them in the moment. Supporting someone living with dementia can bring unexpected challenges that are not always within our control.

I also noticed you mentioned thinking about resigning again. It sounds like you are carrying a lot at the moment. I'm wondering how you are feeling about the role today after having some time to reflect on yesterday's shift?

On a brighter note, congratulations on the banana bread! 🍌🍞 There's something pretty satisfying about finding a great op-shop bargain and then getting good use out of it years later.

We are here to listen.

Re: Another hard day

Individual support is a change of career for me from cleaning. I studied over 12 months because I've been told by a lot of people I've a caring nature I thought I would try it. I keep hearing my boss's voice telling me what she felt like saying to the clients complaint when client said she's a nice woman, boss felt like saying to client but didn't 'who doesn't want to do her job' the thing is I do when I have certain amount of time to do the job there's only so much I can do! I've worked 2 shifts now since complaints and have not smoked in those 2 shifts, to me I'm a winner with that. I'm still getting butterflies in the stomach on the way to work, taking lots of deep breaths on the drive over listening to music as well, writing in my journal @ night I'm notetaking in my phone mistakes I've made determined not to do them again still feeling nervous even after yesterday's shift, I just don't know??

Re: Another hard day

Hey @Spitfire1

It sounds like you are carrying a lot of pressure at the moment, but I also notice how much effort you are putting into learning and adapting to this new role. Changing careers is a big step, and it can take time to build confidence in a completely different environment.

I love how you have continued showing up, reflected on your experiences, journaling, using breathing techniques, and you have even managed two shifts without smoking. That's no small achievement. 🌟

The butterflies and nerves sound really uncomfortable, but they don't necessarily mean you are in the wrong job. Sometimes they can show just how much we care about doing well. From what im hearing, you have a caring nature and willingness to learn.

Be kind to yourself. You are still finding your feet, and it sounds like you are making progress even if it doesn't always feel it.

Take care

Re: Another hard day

Hi everyone feeling a little bit more confident today, another shift without my smoking on it it's becoming easier with this, a little downside maybe I'm looking more into it than it is? I spray myself with a little with body spray so my client doesn't need to know I smoke, even if she tells me she cannot smell, it was diesel smell that came from electric Hedger the gardeners were using, about that 1 of the staff from nursing home came out to verandah we're we were sitting said I can smell something else other than your perfume to me I replied with its diesel smell, she flung back well I didn't know that, these people who work there we all have a dislike for each other, us being contractors them being workers for the nursing home, their little sarcastic comments are really over the top portraying us as not doing our jobs boss knows all about it she says we have a close association with ..... So don't complain pretty sure hierarchy are keeping an eye out too. I pretty much ignore them as I'm there to support my client I do know if I even look at them crosside they report me to clients family for it, they say you better behaved yourself or we'll report you they are not nice staff and their tactics are unethical too. I put my car into panel beater tommorrow for @ least 10 days, will be supplied with a car 4 duration. Went 4 a walk in local botanical garden today was nearly blown off my feet by the wind, came across lovely trees & flowers that have bloomed since being there.
