Empathetic Listening vs Problem Solving

Empathetic Listening vs Problem Solving

I saw a post on Instagram that I thought people on here might appreciate. It was about some research that showed offering solutions when someone is upset often makes them feel less understood. I know I often used to jump to trying to problem solve, partly because I want to help, partly because I often feel frustrated when I’m looking for solutions and people just respond with “that sounds hard”. I liked that this post explained why advice can feel unempathetic and also recommended asking what someone was looking for. I’m currently trying to work on being present with people and helping them feel heard before getting curious about what they think might help. Definitely a work in progress though!

Re: Empathetic Listening vs Problem Solving

Hi @Wintersweet

Empathetic listening is certainly the foundation of counselling.

Advice giving can make a person dependent on the advisor, and the advice may not suit the person.

Better to empower the person by listening and helping them work through the problem themselves. They are the experts in their own life. They will feel heard, and be more invested in any strategies they come up with.

In the words of Rachel Naomi Remen: "Helping, fixing, and serving represent three different ways of seeing life. When you help, you see life as weak. when you fix, you see life as broken. When you serve, you see life as whole. Fixing and helping may be the work of the ego, and service the work of the soul".

Re: Empathetic Listening vs Problem Solving

Looks like I'm responsible.

I posted a picture of myself and my sisters as CHILDREN which apparently is a No No and caused it to shut-down completely.

So sorry @SmilingGecko

Re: Empathetic Listening vs Problem Solving

You cant post pics that could identify yourself @Taali but its not responsible for shutting down the thread. Its happened to a few other people myself included with bugs in the system. Dont worry its not your fault! They will just take pictures down thats all and send you an e-mail mentioning that it went against guidelines
