Something’s not right

So sad, Adult son not treating me right.

So sad, Adult son not treating me right.

Hi all, am new here. Just looking for any advice or inputs? There is a lot of info, so I will try to summarize and be brief. Sorry, it is a lot of info and I'm really sorry and I appreciate anyone who takes time out of their day to read this. I'm a 50 year old female. Am happily married with a 13 year old daughter with my husband. I have a 31 year old son from my first marriage. We have been estranged for quite some time, over 5 years. We were estranged because his then girlfriend didn't like me and told him to cut contact with me, which he did. Just recently, a few months ago, he made contact and said he was no longer with that girl anymore and wanted to reconnect, or more specifically, he needed a place to stay. I was happy we reconnected but a bit wary still as he hasn't always treated me with love and kindness. My husband and I have a very small 2 bedroom home. My daughter had one room, we had the other. I let my son take my daughters room and my daughter slept in my room. My husband in the lounge room on a fold out bed. I told my son to help out with rent. He agreed on 150 for the room. Our rental is 400 per week. At one point, I said to my son that he can stop paying rent all together for a few months as I wanted to give him a chance to get back on his feet. He said thanks. I recently asked him to start paying again, this time I said just pay 80. Again, me trying to be kind. He said ok. He started paying 80. We are on tank water, I asked him to contribute to water and other expenses from time to time. He said that's fine. He recently got a new girlfriend, she's about an hour away. He went to stay at hers for about a week and a half. he didn't pay me any rent, I asked him if he still wants the room. He said yes, but I wasn't there, so I don't have to pay anything. Like what?? We don't get the room, my daughters stuff is scattered all around the place and he won't pay because he wasn't there? And no money for the water either which he agreed to pay. He also has my old car which I sold him for very cheap, but he still hasn't gotten the car in his name yet despite us asking him to do on multiple occasions. He even tells us he speeds and is high while driving. Am I the bad person here? What have I done to deserve this treatment? His response was 'it's not that deep ma'. Like wtaf? I am at a loss. His response was also, well I let my step dad ( my husband) sleep in my room, ( for a few days while recovering from shoulder surgery) . which is actually OUR BED AND OUR FURNITURE that we graciously let my son use. My husband and I really feel we are being used. And it's a horrible feeling. I have no idea what to do. I'm just sitting in bed typing this mess while my son doesn't call or text or anything. Never calls his little sister to check in. It's beyond hurtful and heartbreaking. If you are still reading this, and have made it this far, thank you.

@jell sorry to hear this has happened to you! You sound like a lovely person but your son is taking advantage of you because you are showing leniency with him. You appear to come across more as a friend to your son rather than a disciplinarian which is why he knows he can get away with things. I encourage you to get the book "Your Inner Child of the Past" by Hugh Missildine it explains how we grow up under certain types of parenting. It may give you some insights into your relationship with your son. It just seems to appear to me you werent given many chances in life yourself and wanted to offer the type of upbringing you did not have growing up. Unfortunately offspring know how to take advantage of that and no matter how well meaning you are with your intentions it does not create an ideal family situation. I can understand how heartbreaking it is but you may just have to reassess your relationship with him and whether or not you want him in your life considering he callously cut you off all those years ago with no respect for your hurt feelings. He seems to me the type of son who knows he can get away with anything because you have given into him. If it were me I would be thinking of myself, partner and daughter first and getting some professional counselling regarding your son. If he is walking all over you and abusing his family then what is he doing to other people? You have to ask yourself that question. You may be in for a stark awakening about him even though you are bound by blood ties and are finding it hard to see this situation for what it is.

Re: So sad, Adult son not treating me right.

So do you think he is in the wrong or me? Is it unreasonable of me to expect him to pay his rent for his room even though he has been at his girlfriend's? I am so confused and sad. I don't know what to do? I feel like I am being very reasonable with him.

Hi @jell, it certainly sounds like you are trying to be reasonable. Perhaps have a chat to Relationships Australia https://www.relationships.org.au

Re: So sad, Adult son not treating me right.

Hey @jell . Welcome to the forums. That sounds really tough, and I'm sorry you're going through it.

Not paying rent because you happened to sleep somewhere else isn't really how renting a room works. If he wants the room kept available for him, it's reasonable to expect him to contribute towards it.

It also sounds like it might be time to put some boundaries in place. Can you submit a notice of disposal for the car? Then have a think about whether you still want him renting the room. If it were me, I'd be clear that if he wants to keep the room, he needs to pay the agreed rent whether he's there every night or not.

More than anything though, I'm sorry your kindness hasn't been respected. From what you've shared, you've gone out of your way to help him, and it's understandable that you're feeling hurt.

Thank you for your reply. I don't know what to say. I feel like he's just using us which really hurts when it's supposed to be someone who loves and respects you. 😞
