Talking through trauma and PTSD

Hard place

Hard place

I saw my psychologist and we addressed the abuse I went through as a kid. Not about what happened because I don't want to talk about it in detail but more about the impact it has had on my life. It's like my whole life since then has been shaped by those moments. Like have always put myself down or done things I don't want to so I can make other people feel good or feel happy. I be the person people want or need me to be rather than be myself. It doesn't matter of It's someone close to me or a stranger. Is this normal after going through that as a child?

I've always felt like I need everyone's approval. Even now. Even in places like this. I've been in so many uncomfortable situations but I just can't put myself first. I've given money and paid for things for strangers just to feel needed. I was in a same sex relationship because it made them happy and I felt needed and important to someone.

Is always needing approval and to please people a common thing after abuse?

Does anyone with a similar experience have these same feelings and know how to cope with them?

Re: Hard place

Thanks @Wintersweet

I haven't really told them that it heavily effects me once I am on my own again. I will bring this up at my next appointment, thank you.

I will also check out blueknot. Thank you for your advice.

Thank You, Mindee, yes, am lucky wd the psychologist iv got, I could never have imagined even speaking about abuse with ALL the ones iv had to see previously. We only had one session on the abuse, I didn't do well n he has kinda sacked it for now, im meant to come up with things to make me not react so bad I guess. See his point, but I thought I was gunna get it all outta me for the first time ever, I kinda really want to ~ but fear it just as much when we get back to it

Both wanting to get it all out and finding it really hard to talk about make sense, and is a really hard position to be in. Would you be able to talk to your psychologist about wanting to talk about it and the fear of talking about it? It sounds like at the moment you’re feeling like you have to be the one to work out how to manage talking about it but I’d hope your psychologist could help prepare/equip you to talk about it. I’m hoping that would help you feel more supported.

Re: Hard place

I'm sorry, that has come out arse about, he hasn't left it up to me alone to figure out, he is on it to haha. I can see what he's saying, but I really have no idea what will work. I have no contact with family, andI have no inkling to. My social circle is small. As far as ideas to cope, u could go for a walk, make a nice meal blar blar blar, but I probably won't do whatever WE come up with because when I there with him it seems plausible or possible even,. But when said n done, I get home & the somewhat trance like state returns & nothing makes me feel anything but dam dread

@prettypigeon

May you have strength and peace on your journey too.

Have you heard of BlueKnot? Thought I should mention them in case you haven’t come across them.

@WannabeFree

I’m glad he’s on it. Hoping that if you explain the challenge you’re having with the trance-like state he’ll be able to work with you on what might help you with that too. I know my psych has encouraged me to practice the coping strategies when I’m doing more ok so I can build up the skills. I also found it helpful to find a guided recording of the type of exercise my psych wanted me to do so I wasn’t trying to remember in the moment. And as I mentioned to prettypigeon, BlueKnot might also be helpful.
