DID - Parts with their own mental health struggles?

DID - Parts with their own mental health struggles?

This is my first time ever posting anything in a forum, so I hope I don’t accidentally break any rules.

I’ve been aware of having an internal crew for a few years now, and while I haven’t had a formal psychiatrist diagnosis (though this might change soon), all my treatment team are aware and work within a supportive framework.

Recently in counselling we have been working more deeply on a long-held fear (of doing specific bad stuff) of one of my parts.

Through some accidental research, it made really clear sense that this looks very much like OCD.

So my question is - have others found that sometimes specific mental health struggles are exclusive to individual parts, rather than impacting everyone? Or is it more that it presents differently for each part, but is still across everyone? Has anyone gained diagnosis for a mental illness that only seems to affect one part?

(I’m not sure there’s benefit for me getting an OCD diagnosis since I’m getting the support I need anyway, but just thinking it through)

welcome to the forums @SnapPutty it is a wonderful supportive community, i have been on the forums for a long time and have found it to be so amazing.

as to your question about OCD yes i do find OCD will affect some parts of my life but not others, i have a thing about washing my hands and having to have certain items in a specific location. i also have to keep checking door locks.

working on the OCD can help, i have been working on my hand washing. not using soap but just running my hands under water. a small step, but a step none the less.

Thanks for your reply 🙂

I think just having your hands under water without the soap is a big win!!

Hi @SnapPutty

To my knowledge, different Alters just struggle with different presentations of things which the whole body has

So some single Parts might have more Autistic traits, or more severe OCD. Some documented cases apparently even have one alter with active diabetes or epilepsy, while the rest don't (Source: Dissociation Made Simple-Jamie Marich)

But it's thought to be that one or more Alters hold those traits as a survival strategy. If say, you struggled somewhat in adolescence with OCD, but it was heavily disciplined-Those traits might go to an Alter who only presents in a different context. Depending on where they have the freedom (Only home, or only school etc)

Hi @SnapPutty,

You may find helpful lived experience support within the Hearing Voices network which also encompasses DID:
