Olympians

Olympians

In the pantheon of the Greek gods, there were 12 Olympians. It was believed they all lived (with the exception of Hades, who had a summer home in the Underworld) atop the highest mountain in the land, Mt. Olympus, from where they guided humankind, such as it was back then, in different areas of life. Sometimes they got involved with human emotions too, affairs of the heart, for example, joy, anger, vengeance (if you were feelin’ a little ‘wrathy’ and needed advice)!

In a fun way, we can look at these gods as extensions of our own needs and emotions. We can use them as an archetype to help us understand complex things in an easy way. Below is a list of the 12 (I left Hades out, he was not the sociable type and lived on his own far far away in the deep South).

Zeus: King of the gods, earthquakes and thunder (he was an ACDC fan, I just know it). In your own life, have you been used to being in charge of your domain, only to find things a bit topsy turvy lately? That king is still inside you, regardless of the dangly bits you possess - the concept is what is important.

Hera: Queen of the gods. She was also the one to oversee the concepts of family and marriage. Maybe you are the peacemaker, the one others come to when they have problems, and they look to you for strength, your peace, your wisdom. She is still within you, you just have to remember her.

Ares: This was the god of warfare (actually pretty nasty warfare…lets just say he didn’t hold back). From a practical standpoint, maybe you have conflict in your life and need to confront your problems and win them over? Any battle needs a strategy and thinking on paper can make that plan more concrete, more defined. Maybe you see “red” too easily and need to learn from it?

Poseidon: The famous god of the sea. Perhaps you have an ocean of things to deal with, and are finding it a little overwhelming? That’s okay, big waves eventually dissipate into smaller ones, and sometimes we just have to ride them out till they do. A little known fact about Poseidon is that he was also god of horses, so maybe you need to saddle up and get yourself back on after a fall, and lead the charge to your next level?

Athena: Ah, the lovely Athena…goddess of wisdom. She was shrewd and was, ironically, also the goddess of the warfare strategy - perhaps you need a new battle plan. Any good general needs loyal advisors, so perhaps it makes sense to talk to others who can help you plan and achieve your goal? In her spare time (I am guessing), she was also goddess of handicraft…perhaps a little reminder to find a sense of purpose and meaning again?

Demeter: She was goddess of agriculture and also of the harvest. Maybe you need to plant new ‘crops’ and change direction if things have not been working? Maybe you can harvest an entirely new “you” that is more in line with your truth?

Apollo: Ah, the man, the god, the music! Apollo ruled over music, prophecy, healing. Music is one of the most precious gifts we have - it can lift us to heights we can only imagine, help us heal, helps us to see the future in a different way, can’t it? The world also needs your “music” because it is unique to you and reaches people in ways others may not. Apollo also ruled over lighting, a good reminder to recharge when needed.

Aphrodite: Goddess of love, passion, and beauty. Has your passion gone? It’s not really gone (energy cannot be destroyed, only changed. It simply “is”), its just on the back burner currently. What do you really love, and what could you be passionate about again if you tried? Remember, small steps in the beginning.

Hephaesius: Bet you never heard of him! He was the god of fire, also metalworking aaaaaand sculpture…on a slow night. Have you lost your fire? The good news is you can always reignite it, you just need to find a little motivation and remember who you really are. Maybe a little heavy “metal” work is in order, in order to get yourself feeling good again (music has such power, in all its forms). What would your life be like if you could “sculpt” a new you?

Dionysus: Mr Party himself. God of all things festival, theater and…wine! Sometimes, we isolate and forget how to socialise over time. Life is all about balance - work hard, play hard. They are symbiotic - one does not work in the long term sans t’other, mon ami. Often with a beautiful piece of music, the rests are just as important as the notes themselves - that’s why classical has such beauty, because of the ebb and flow of the notes and the rests, n’est pas?

Hermes: The messenger of the gods. What ‘messages’ are you sending to yourself, about yourself, and to others? See, Hermes, not only sent messages, he also ruled over trade and of thieves too. Are you selling yourself short, or have you allowed others to rob you of your goodness?

Artemis: Goddess of the hunt. What are you hunting for? She was also goddess of the wilderness and also archery…where is your arrow pointing toward…positive or negative? Do you feel like you have been out in the wilderness for a while…that’s okay, you just need to remember who you were originally and you will find your way home.

The above were all myth of course, but, hopefully you found my little story helpful in reminding yourself of your true power that is still inside, just waiting to be reawakened. You can take from any or all of these 12 and reshape your future to something that makes you happy.

Peace.
