Burnout and Isolation from Caring for my Younger Brother
Good evening everyone :)
I'm 23 and currently work part-time and do university full-time and for the last few years my youngest brother has been going through increasingly complex mental health issues.
This last Monday he got admitted into an inpatient facility due to worsening bipolar symptoms and the looking risk of him harming himself or others. I have kind of stumbled into becoming his primary carer as he completely isolates himself for anyone except for me. He won't talk to my parents or my other brother and has repeatedly deleted all social media to isolate himself so I'm not sure if he is talking to any friends either. So it is definitely a lot of pressure on myself to be his only point of social contact as well as keeping track of his symptoms to make sure he isn't feeling any violent thoughts.
I feel like it's all coming to a head now. He is in a facility where the only time he can leave is if someone signs him out for a few hours and my parents have kind of pawned this onto me as they seem to think he won't want to see them. It's a lot of pressure and I want to be there for him and it's clear my parents are burnt out from being his carer for all these years as he has always been difficult. Its just so hard. Working an 8 hour shift at a socially intensive role (receptionist) then having to meet with my brother and have him just say all these things to me which are quite distressful. Sometimes it's so bad I have to warn mum and dad about what he says.
In spite of this I still see him through all of this. He can be funny, sensitive, caring and a lovely person to be around when you see through the shroud of anger he keeps himself in. I keep trying to get my parents to meet with him, but they seem so apprehensive and I see him after work 3 days a week. My mother also has cancer right now and that's something else that weighs on my mind.
It just feels so isolating. I hang out with my friends from university and I just pretend nothing is going on in my family life when I feel like I'm being debilitated slowly from this. It feels way too heavy to talk to them about this so I just kinda compartmentalize and pretend it's not happening.
Anyways, thank you for reading my post. I really appreciate it :)
