A poem about waking up with the wrong foot out of bed.
Faithful and True
This morning I awoke to mindful death,
A familiar guest there beside my bed,
Whispering hurtful and bitter things,
Feeding dark times lived left unsaid.
Hot blood thirsty thoughts retaliating,
preaching revenge was surely mine to take,
Promising justice for my deepest wounds,
Yet leaving God's love dead in my wake.
Red-handed His Word caught me in my aim
Not faithful prayer but my intended deed,
For I had no good intentions doing right
Rather Christ met me in my greatest need.
I thought I knew my own heart in the dark
Thought I had measured all my inner pain,
Yet much deeper still dug the Living Word
A hail-bound heart thawing His gentle rain.
I had wanted to erase His gift of life.
To let despair ruling become my king,
Yet Faithful and True He met me thus,
He didn't agree to destroy the living.
Rather heed His Voice of Truthful Love,
The Word corrected me firmly yet kind,
His Spirit of Love casting out my fear,
Leaving the misery of death far behind.
Whilst the nausea abated in His Rest Today,
The dogs fed while the pot was being stirred,
Gratefully I smiled away the bitter tears,
For once more I experienced Living His Word.
Not that I had understood doing it right,
captive to a bed of thorns without any care.
No more beat myself up angry and depressed,
But hear Jesus say don't keep going there.
So I remain beneath His revealing gaze,
No boast from my lips can lay any claim,
Even so He opened my prison doors wide,
So He could call me by my rightful name.
The hardened dirt He dug up from my heart,
Humbled I watch The Farmer sow The Seed,
A fruitful harvest in His Kingdom to grow
As the rulers of wrong in my life recede.
All praise to Jesus, gracious and merciful,
Whose forgiving love met me where I trod,
no more wishing to depart The Way ahead,
He carried me Home into the love of God.
