Riding a wave

Riding a wave

Hi all,

@CherryBomb, @Former-Member or any other @Former-Member floating around Forum Land, will you ride a wave with me? I thought I would be fine doing something...but it turns out that the something has made my big feelings BIG and now I'm in a pickle...and there's nothing worse than a pickled turtle! I'm going to go and snuggle in my bed so I probably won't actually respond to you, but it will still super help me to know that I am not utterly alone on the wave. I don't want to tag anyone else because I don't want anyone to feel they need to respond. Thank you in advance for riding with me.

Haha @Phoenix_Rising, I also dont have many shoes. I like owning them but I hate shopping for them. They say Einstien wore the exact same thing everyday. Maybe youre just closer to being a genius @Phoenix_Rising 😉

What can I say @Phoenix_Rising...I love shoes

That would make me the farthest from a genius... @Phoenix_Rising I'm happy for you to take this title

Re: Riding a wave

@Former-Member and @Former-Member you will watch over the ocean tonight? I super love Friday Feast. It is such a nice distraction from my super gigantic muddle. Now as I start to snuggle into my shell I can feel the weight of my muddle bearing down on me. Thank you for helping me to forget it for a little time. I know I need to just keep on keeping on and hopefully my turtle whisperer and I will be able to try and wade through at least a tinsy tiny bit of the muddle on Tuesday. That's only four days away. Good thing I don't live on Venus.

Super big thank you for watching over the ocean. Good night.

Just wanted to let you know the Little Mermaid is here and watching over the ocean for the Little Turtle tonight, @Phoenix_Rising!

Re: Riding a wave

Psssst @CheerBear and @Zoe7, this is a super quick flyby, but I wanted to at least get a conversation started about our DBT adventure. @Zoe7 I know you are superly duperly struggling at the moment and it is absolutely a bazillion percent ok if you aren't up to this.

I think it would be cool to title the thread "Let's do dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)." What do you think?

Then I think we need to have some introductory stuff based on the preface and pages 1-16 of the manual. And THEN I think we can get stuck into the actual skills. What do you think? I know my slow and steady methodical detail-orientated approach is probably the total opposite to your approach to doing things @CheerBear. I'm really conscious though of what an awesome resource this thread could potentially be for a lot of people and therefore I think it is worth taking our time with it. It makes me so cranky that there is such a strong evidence base attesting to the benefits of DBT and yet it is inaccessible to so many people. The idea of making it accessible in this way feels super cool to me. Also, given that there are about a bazillion skills, I can see that this is going to be an ongoing adventure like the great yoga adventure so I really think we need to pace ourselves!

Anyway, let me know what you think. Oh and by the way, I'm posting this here because the ocean is much quieter than either the nest or the octagonal room, which I'm pretty sure reflects the fact that you guys are actually sociable whereas me, not so much.

Re: Riding a wave

I like the slow and steady approach @Phoenix_Rising - particularly with how I am feeling at present. I have my book (it came on Friday and I completely forgot to tell you - pretty much says where I am at that a 'present' in the post didn't even rate in my mind ) I am more than happy to be guided by you little turtle - but I am sure you won't be surprised if I 'fall behind' you and @CheerBear. I really want to do this with you both - just not sure I am up to it right now - I know you will both understand if I can't keep up. In saying that - I will let you know if it becomes too much.

Re: Riding a wave

Hi @Phoenix_Rising and @Zoe7 🙂

Zoe, I'm really happy to hear that your book arrived safely at its new home, though I can imagine that maybe it isn't the best timing when you're feeling as you are (then again, maybe it is also great timing in a way too). Like phoenix_rising, I definitely understand that you may not be up to it right now, or up to it for a while and then not up to it etc. Totally your choice and completely with you however you want to do this.

What's slow and steady again? (Kidding). I flew through the first section of it but have every intention of revisiting it again. I kind of need to skim over things and then go back through them again to best get my head around them. I think that's just how I learn best.

Like Zoe, I am happy to be led by you with the thread phoenix_rising, if you're happy with that? I agree with all of what you've mentioned above and feel similarly. I don't have my book or notes on me today but will have it back from tomorrow. I found parts of the first section of the book incredibly helpful (but my banana brain can't work out exactly what they were right now to flag them here). Long story short, even before I got to the specific skills I found it helpful, and can see value in giving the introductory stuff some space as well.

Are you planning on going page by page through the whole book in order? I may not do this, but I do plan on going through all of it eventually. I was trying to work out whether to follow the skills from a certain schedule (and then which one), or whether to go through the modules one by one in order, or whether to just pick and choose (and then how/based on what). I asked my psych whether they had any recommendations, expecting they may say to follow a schedule, or give me a list of handouts to try, and they said to skim over the modules and then pick what I felt would work well and practice them. So I guess that's what I am doing, although my skimming came to a halt as I found the very first handout and worksheet (and the subsequent handouts and worksheets) have all caught my interest. I don't want to confuse any adventure/adventurers with my kind of jumbled brain/way of doing things, but I'm pretty sure I'll be able to find a way of participating without doing this (I'll just be careful) 🙂

As I said, from tomorrow I will have my notes and folders and book back with me but the next couple of weeks may be a bit hit and miss in terms of forum adventuring, as our usual day-to-day life is not usual at all during school holidays. I have a feeling that will be understood and ok though 🙂

Thanks for starting this conversation - I'm very excited to hear you're in a place to be able to think about it phoenix_rising!

Re: Riding a wave

Hi @CheerBear and @Zoe7,

Right now I'm thinking of reading the manual from start to finish - very slooooooowly. Having said that, I don't intend to talk about all of it in Forum Land. I think it would be awesome if we could follow one of the schedules, but realistically, I know I can't commit to being able to prepare a post covering each week's content according to the schedule and I'm assuming you guys can't either. Thus right now I'm imagining that after the introductory bit, we would maybe do a skill a week, akin to the pose-a-week we are doing in our yoga group. If we found progress too slow, we could always bump it up to 2-3 skills a week. However, I think it is best to start super slow. What do you think of that for a plan @Zoe7 and @CheerBear?

@CheerBear I am certain you won't confuse anyone. I mean, look at our yoga adventure; we have the structure of a pose a week, and yet we have some people happily doing entirely different poses...and that is totally ok. I think maybe our DBT adventure might shape up like that; we will have a general structure, but random tangents will be totally ok too. I'll do the structure bit, you do the random tangents bit.

@Zoe7 It is totally fine to jump in and out of this adventure whenever you want to. I am certain we will all be doing that. By the way, when I was flicking through the manual today, I saw the "nightmare protocol" on pages 398-400 and it made me think of you. I wonder if that could be helpful for you? I can't imagine how hard it must be dealing with nightmares. For whatever reason, that isn't something that has ever been a major issue for me.

Where do you think we should put this thread @CheerBear and @Zoe7? Maybe under "looking after our wellbeing" or do you think it would fit under "our experiences and stories"????? This is superly duperly exciting that we can do this together but not.
