New here

Hi
I'm new to sane and I am hoping to get some support. I find it difficult going to my family for support sometimes because I feel like a burdon and I can't tell them everything.
I have been getting help for anxiety and depression for just over 2 years now. Recently I had a setback and started harming myself. It was the relief I needed.
That was about a month ago.. I've had some good and bad days since but the past couple of days have been quite hard! I have a job interview tomorrow so like anyone I am very nervous!
I need to know how to get through the night, without harming, without harming thoughts.
The job position is disability support worker so I'm hoping so much that my anxiety doesn't ruin this for me..
Please help
Kelly

Re: New here

Hi @Kel7, welcome to the forums. It's exciting, albeit anxiety-provoking, that you have a job interview tomorrow. It sounds like you have only recently started self harming, although you have been struggling with anxiety and depression for a couple of years, is that right? Have you been able to share with anyone your struggle around self harm (SH) - a GP or psychologist perhaps? I know a lot of people find distraction techniques helpful when they are working at not engaging in SH - things like taking a bath, listening to music, doing housework, hanging around here on the forums . I SH, but I'm ok with this fact so personally it isn't something I work particularly hard at not doing. However, if I do for some reason want to abstain from doing it, I find one of the best things is holding icecubes - it provides a very intense and unpleasant sensation which has the same calming effect for me as SHing.

All the very best with the interview tomorrow and I hope to see you around here on the forums. Just one thing...you signed off your post with a name. I know anonymity is a very important part of the forums here so I'm not sure if that is your real name or not. I know I have sometimes gone to sign off with my name and then remembered not to just in time, so I thought I'd just point this out.

Re: New here

@Kel7. Welcome to the forum and thank you for sharing a little of your story.
You will find this forum to be a safe place to express yourself - with no judgements from others.
When you have time - have a look at different threads (topics). There are friendly places just to chat and catch up with people and not be alone. Eg: the Beer Garden or Anyone want to chat.
If you are struggling for some company at night - go and check out the Night (bugger forgot the rest of its title - bad memory).
There are threads for Art Lovers, those into sports, those who love cats or birds. Then there are threads where people need a friendly ear. Someone to listen to them or offer advice. Feel free to join in any conversations on these threads, anytime you want.
The job interview sounds great. Working in the disability sector would be so rewarding. So I wish you all the best at your interview tomorrow. Please let us know how it goes.
When you get to the interview - before stepping in the door - stop and take 3 deep breaths - put your shoulders back - hold your head high - tell yourself "I've got this" - and then walk right in and be yourself.

Re: New here

Hi @Kel7

Welcome to the forums 🙂 it's great to see you here, event hough im sorry that its at a time when things are not so great. I have struggled in similar ways to you and there arent any easy fixes but people do get through these things Glad you've been getting help! Have you been able to tell them about what's been happening lately for you re the set back/self harming? I found it ... very difficult to talk about but was very surprised that it was only compassionate support and helpful advice that came from it. I think its something that we use when things are pretty bad, and just stopping without somthing else to help us cope is almost impossible. So i try to switch it for something that helps. so instead of getting the relief from self harming I will try to do soemthing else that will help, like listen to music that is calming, colour a picture, or eat some chocolate (i know!! not healthy either!). for me self harming only helped for a short time anyway so i was able to tell myself that these other things were just as good for that short time (ok almost as good sometimes!).

Wishing you all the best for you interview tomorrow! stand tall 🙂

good luck

lj

Re: New here

Hi Kel7

It seems to be tomorrow already so how did you go with the job interview?

I too avoid talking to family. I just don't know what to say that doesn't make me seem like such a sad case. Besides, I don't really want to hear all the well-meaning (but obvious yet not really useful) things they are likely to say. Maybe that isn't a good enough reason tho...

Let us know how you went with the interview - good, bad...?

🙂

Re: New here

Thank you everyone for the support!
I have SH in the past. Usually I find myself punching at myself when I'm really angry and frustrated with myself. I have only recently started cutting and get so much more relief out of it. Although I can't carry on with it! As much as its a relief irw also a struggle. Only my boyfriend knows. I have worn jeans for the last part of the summer to cover my legs from anyone else. Its hard on my bf too. He is very supportive but gets quite upset when he swws me hurt. He too has suggested the ice in hands.
Anyway, my interview! I didn't think it went well at all. When my boyfriend (who kindly offered to drive me) picked me up I burst into tears. The whole experience was pretty horrible. But then today my lovely friend who was my supervisor at my previous job said that they called her for a reference. I will find out by tomorrow if I get the job
