When family really don't understand
Hi everyone!
Lately, I've been having a super rough patch with my anxiety, which has left me either avoiding family functions or not coping well during them e.g. shutting down. Which, unfortunately, people misread as me being rude. ![]()
After being accused of "tearing the family apart", I decided to make a video explaining what was going on and how people could better support me. I sent it to 6 close family members.
For the most part, people have been pretty okay. There's one, however, who while trying to make an effort accused me of not trying hard enough to fix it, blamed me for not being able to function at family events and making everyone else feel uncomfortable, and of being a bad parent.
I feel very unheard, demoralised, and generally, don't know how to respond. I feel like I'm being pushed out and that if I can't "behave normally", then I'm not welcome.
Have you had to deal with anything like this? Any tips on successfully navigating negative responses and reactions to your anxiety or mental health?
Cheers!
