when your physical health starts falling apart on your way to mental health recovery

when your physical health starts falling apart on your way to mental health recovery

Hi there,

Has anyone found their physical health deteriorating on their mental health recovery journey? Interested to hear about other people's stories.

I was late diagnosed with ADHD and autism (late 40's early 50's) and I was diagnosed with CPTSD in my late 30's. On my mental health recovery journey (my ongoing rollercoaster ride), I have had deteriorating joint issues, liver problems, insomnia, I tore the meniscus in both my knees and last weekend I was diagnosed with an aneurysm.

Does it all fall apart at the same time for everyone? What are some things that help keep the calm?

Hello @nanzey

Nice to meet you.

Yes, my physical health has been impacted by mental illness.

However it is also symptomatic of age as well as a heightened awareness of my body and a reduction in my capacity to view physical well-being as a "just that".

Our minds really do mess with our ability to function well and cope with the ups and downs of life.

I hope your road has fewer bumps as you progress.

I am certainly not trying to minimise the way you feel. We all know just how psychologically vulnerable we can be. This is real!

Please believe in YOU and know that you have the support of fellow sufferers.

Go gently ✨️ and never stop reaching out. 💝

Good morning @nanzey,

Welcome to the forums, and thank you for sharing so openly about what’s been happening for you.

It sounds like you’ve been carrying a lot, especially navigating late diagnoses alongside significant physical health challenges as well. I can imagine receiving the aneurysm diagnosis on top of everything else would feel incredibly overwhelming.

While everyone’s experience is different, many people do find that physical and mental health can affect each other quite strongly, especially after long periods of stress, trauma, burnout, or constantly pushing through. Sometimes it can feel like once one area becomes harder to manage, other things begin surfacing too.

In terms of keeping calm, a lot of people find it helps to focus on very small and gentle things day by day, things like rest, grounding activities, creative hobbies, connecting with supportive people, spending time with pets, listening to music, or simply slowing things down where possible. It often isn’t one big thing, but lots of smaller moments of care and support over time.

I’m really glad you reached out here, and I hope you find some understanding and connection from others in the community who may relate to parts of your experience 💛

I’m not sure if this counts but I’ve got a bulging disc. I’m apparently gluten-free. I feel things inside hurt. I’ve just never got them checked out. Also late diagnosis of ADHD CPTSD possible autism. I just haven’t explored that side yet.

Hi @Taali, thank you for your reply. I certainly understand the reduction in capacity as I have entered my half centenary.

Hi @sauceyemu I totally understand the everything hurts inside. I'm sorry to hear of your bulging disc, that level of pain can be quite unbearable and the physical pain can definitely amplify our emotions.

Hi @Nala2022 - you are definitely right about other things surfacing when something becomes harder to manage. Thank you.

Yeah look, I have noticed the clearer my mind feels sometimes my back doesn’t hurt at all, the more stress or overwhelmed feeling I have that day or following days it comes back. Whether that’s in my mind or not I’m unaware. Have seen many correlations between mental health and physical health being kind of linked
