Something’s not right

ANZAC Day blues

ANZAC Day blues

I have trouble getting through ANZAC Day. My non-combat unit in Vietnam was small, about 20 members all up. People rotated in and out so perhaps you knew someone for 6 months maybe a bit more before they posted home. As a result there are no reunions or groups to march with. As a seriously dedicated introvert, I dislike making small talk with strangers. This makes getting. involved in groups and conversations extremely difficult for me. So I'm between a rock and a hard place as they say. I want to get involved but I don't at the same time. What's the solution?

Isolation doesn’t help. You need to push past your fear and interact. Join a forum if there’s one available. Otherwise take a trip into an RSL. I know it’s easy for others to say and your own struggles might make it seem totally overwhelming but if you just break it into tiny chunks such as a trip to the RSL or joining the forum it will hopefully feel less difficult .

Hi @Maxx02,

Welcome to the forums- ANZAC can be a conflicting day for veterans, and it seems as though it's been tough for you. The great thing about these forums is that some wonderful connections can be made from the comfort of wherever you are, introvert or not!

I just wanted to let you know that we have a great veteran community over in our Shoulder to Shoulder spaces. Feel free to jump over there to connect with others who might have some suggestions to finding your solution.

Hello.

I’m sorry to hear you’re going through a hard time, and I have to agree that staying isolated is going to make it harder for you.

I’m not a fan of small talk either - so many people aren’t, there are just some that are more used to looking like they enjoy it, even if they don’t. Oftentimes, we use small talk just to bridge a gap for deeper connection to happen, not because it’s enjoyable.

I think a good place to start would be as someone else suggested, trying online. That way you can opt out if it gets uncomfortable with no repercussion. For example, Reddit threads or Facebook groups dedicated to veterans. I did a quick search, and you seem to have some options there.

This way, you can connect with people who understand and you can create a topic to discuss whatever you yourself want. For example, if you want to meet up, you could post on Facebook to see if someone nearby is available. Or if you want a deep discussion, a Reddit thread could enable you to get different inputs much like this forum. Or you can just casually read what others are posting to feel a bit connected.

Despite all that, actually going out to be around others is always best. If there are any ANZAC events still happening at a local RSL or other venues, you could try going just to be around others. Sometimes doing this alone makes a person feel more connected and involved than staying home.
