Need a second opinion .. thanks

Need a second opinion .. thanks

A close mate and work colleague of more than 25 years asked me and my wife to attend his 60 th birthday

The invitation was sent out over 2 months ahead of the event with a please keep the date free . Immediately I alerted my wife and she agreed with me that we certainly won’t miss this special occasion

By the way this man was Groomsman at our wedding and my wife and I also attended his wedding where I was honoured to be groomsman for him

Then I find out only a few days before the event when telling my wife it was the day to formally confirm our attendance that we can’t go. We had told him ( and his wife who organised the party ) numerous times that we were both so much looking forward to sharing his big night

The reason for the cancellation .. her daughter (who is well into her 20s) decided to book a concert on the same day leaving her elderly grandmother (who she is official paid carer for) needing my wife to look after her for the night .. she has dementia and can’t be left alone. So our plans for a special night with a very special friend were just discarded despite the fact we were the ones who had locked in the date with plenty of time

Thoughts anyone as I was told I was selfish wanting to tell her daughter politely that we were sorry but on this occasion we had a long term commitment to a special night out and she couldn’t go to a concert this time as she had a duty to do (as she is paid to do) and stay with her grandmother in her carers role.

Hi @PL60,

without knowing full details, it's easy to speculate but from what you are describing it's starting to look like your stepdaughter is creating a wedge between you and your wife. This could be because of jealousy, insecurity or she doesn't approve of the relationship. Pay special attention as to how someone treats you. Overtime a pattern of behaviour will emerge and you will know the truth. In other words if this keeps happening it cannot be coincidental it is intentional. It may get to the point that your partner will have to make a decision, choose you or her daughter. Also since your wife has a close bond with her daughter, she can easily be manipulated by her own daughter which is wrong if she is doing that. It shouldn't be a tug of war, to go spend time with your wife. If i were you i would go to the wedding on my own, you shouldn't feel restricted or stopped from attending.

@PL60 , just wanted to mention that your wife keeps siding with her family. I would put my foot down and tell her i'm going to the birthday whether you are coming or not. If she argues with you or calls you names it's unacceptable. You didn't marry her to be putting up with this.

I'm so so so sorry to hear this has happened @PL60 . It sounds so hard.

Is there any way you can arrange for respite care through an external agency? If the venue isn't far, can you attend even a little bit of it?

It's a tough choice, but I can see what this event means to you.

Can there be some compromise at all?
