Thoughts?

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are doing as well as can be.

I’m coming up to 1 year sober in 8 days, so that is a massive positive!

On the other hand, I have always been told I have ADHD — whether by a psychologist, OT, mental health nurse, you name it. They always asked ne if I had or hinted that I have ADHD. Anywho, I finally had an assessment done, and now I have more questions than answers.

The psychiatrist said: “In my opinion, **** is presenting with symptoms consistent with complex PTSD, BPAD (Bipolar) and cluster B personality traits. He has some symptoms of ADHD, although there is significant crossover with his comorbid conditions. There is also significant risk with stimulant prescribing for him given his complex comorbidities.”

So… is this an official diagnosis? Do I need to follow up further with the GP or psychiatrist? They haven’t answered any of my emails when I’ve asked questions. Now I just feel confused.

Re: Thoughts?

Sounds like the diagnosis is CPTSD and bipolar

With subclinical cluster B (borderline, narcissistic or antisocial personality disorders) and ADHD. But those traits may tie back to the diagnoses listed in paragraph 1

Hi @Shift83

I have been told that a diagnosis is not be be all and the end. If I was you I would ask your Dr what do these diagnoses mean and what is the best way to treat them. There are generally three types of treatment. A Psychiatrist can prescribe drugs that can help manage the symptoms. There is psychotherapy which is best done with a psychologist. Then there is the natural remedies which are a risk as they don't always work. I have CPTSD and I have had some successes with rapid eye movement therapy. It is a therapy that is gaining popularity as a way to help with CPTSD. I hope this helps.

Re: Thoughts?

Hey @Shift83, first of all, massive congrats on being nearly 1 year sober, that’s huge!

I can understand why you’d be feeling confused after that appointment. The way they’ve worded it isn’t very clear, and it doesn’t really answer the “so what does this actually mean for me?” part.

It sounds like they’ve kind of given their thoughts, but not properly explained it, which is frustrating, especially when they’re not replying to you. It’s completely fair to want clearer answers.

If you can, it might be worth trying to follow it up with your GP or booking another appointment just to go through it all properly and ask your questions. I find writing what questions you'd like to ask helpful to better prepare for the appointment and bringing them with you.

You’re definitely not the only one who’s walked away from an assessment feeling more confused than before. I hope you’re able to get some clearer answers soon 🙂

Thanks for all the replies!

For some reason I can't click on the little heart thing to show apprication.

Think it's probably best to get back to the GP and discuss with them further as suggested.

Have a great Sunday.

Re: Thoughts?

It does sound confusing. Some psychiatrists are renowned for misdiagnosing adhd. If after checking back in with your GP for clarification and it doesn’t sit right with you, it is reasonable to get a second opinion. Painful I know. If you do go down this path it is good to research if the psychiatrist specialises in ADHD or promotes being neuro-affirming. You are worth it. My son also did a mydna test to show what medications might cause adverse effects. You can order them online for around $100-150 and they email you the results. Good luck.

Hey @Mikareem

Just a little tip, if you want other members to be notified that you've responded, you can tag them using the @ symbol, then selecting (or typing if they aren't in the drop down menu) their username so it shows up in blue, like this: @Shift83

Also @Shift83 the support button is on the fritz at the moment! Tagging @Nala2022 @Walkoneggshells @DogMan79 so they can see your response 😊

Re: Thoughts?

Thanks a lot. And actually I had one of those myDNA tests because I can’t handle a lot of medication and always end up with the 1/1,000,000 side effects! And I’m thinking of another opinion it’s just the money. Took me for ever to save up for the first assessment.
