Depressed with my situation, later 50s

Depressed with my situation, later 50s

Hi there people thx for having me. 1st post so l this is an ok place for depression as l couldn't find a depression section.

lt seems to me crazy especially at this stage but l'm just so damn stuck about my situation and just can not seem to be able to come up with a decision on what to do with it.

l didn't do well getting rid of my house but l did still also have a block of land in a small town. My ex and l bought it yrs back it was just suppose to be an investment but now because of the way things went with my house, it's looking like the best solution from here would be to just build something on the block. There's no debt on the block at all now and l do have small savings left that l could build a simple house with so financially it'd be ideal as l'd have no debt or mortgage.

Problem is a few things.

1stly, although l moved to regional area awhile back now, l grew up in the city but the town here at the block is tiny, no shops just a pub. Nearest decent town is 45k away.

The block does have a small cabin on it and l;ve been staying 6mths now supposedly figuring out whether l wanna build on it of not.

lt is a pretty block and spot and l'd have no debt if l just stayed here, where as not only don't l feel up to moving any more but l can't afford to now or to take on a new mortgage either after the house loss but somewhere better would be much much dearer and there'd be no way without one.

Trouble is, the town depresses the hell out of me especially at night every night l just sink again even if the day hasn't been too bad, sometimes even quite nice. Night comes round and down l go.

lt's just so damn small and away and at night there's just nothing except house lights on, that's it.

l mean if l had a choice l wouldn't choice to settle here never bought it back when for that at all, it's just the best solution though all round for sure. All round except that l just get so damn depressed out here.

So 6mths and l'm still absolutely nowhere about building something so l'm still just in the little cabin. Trouble with just doing it is, that if this went on and l just hated it here, l might not even be able to sell it and get my money back anyway and it still leaves the same problems above, with going somewhere better anyway.

lt's mad but l don't think l've ever been so stuck in my life.

Best to all.

mr

@Appleblossom

Hya apple, musics a tough one for me, all sorts. Tab here intro'd me to radiohead, love some of their stuff now buttt, everything from eminem all the way back to pink flyod , nick cave.

Trains so cool l reckon, thinking through wk cars all done shame prob won't catch it again for yrs now, gonna miss it. Came down from sydney to once bc ex and l use to go to and from hers to mine but the car broke down. So after driving up and back for yrs, couldn't believe you could just sit on a train so easily and someone else drives- v cool l thought- and all in one day.

@TAB @mrmista I long for the days of amps and graphic eq's. I've still got a 90's Philips amp that came with the surround sound for my TV and I am going to see if I can hook it up to some external speakers for the TV one of these days.

The speakers that came with the surround sound system have not been used in over 20 years, I should see if they still work!

I think I would go even more nuts without music, as someone who spends a lot of time alone, I completely understand the need for good sound.

That and 2 years studying sound engineering!

Re: Depressed with my situation, later 50s

my idea from 40years ago was to build my own speakers @ENKELI still think will get pro to do one set. meanwhile I have to sell like the 3 sets that upgraded from, well they made sense at the time and did job til I stopped in the one place and could get something more physically substantial. maybe you could use study again one day @mrmista (hope you saw pics I put up)

yEah mate for sure tbh l'm so flued up just reading today but had a laugh at somem you reminded me of there. Built my first speaker at 16. l found a 44g drum, went to this shop guy had all sorts of stereo bits- back in the days stereos were real stereos eh and people actually built their own. Aske if he had something with good sound l could put in the drum. Gave me this whopping single speaker and then a little tweeter showed me how to wire that. Took them home mounted that drum up on a wall and neighbours from 2blocks away hated me from that day on .

Honestly to this day can't believe though how few people complained, even dad, now and then he'd yell turn that damn thing down but really.

Think they just hated me in silence mostly.

man l long for those days to , no effg idea wth to buy now. classic speakers you got there. my beloved was a Yamaha to, really missin that thing now.

lt was a micro but one with some punch and beautiful sound. it was a pretty expensive one had it 16yrs mounted it in the caravan for my trip and all was pretty funny though, bit too much punch for the van people would be like wth ?????? one mornng a chick camping about 200mtrs away came knocked on the van door wanted to know what a particular song l'd played last night was.

But now l dunno wth to buy, was thinking going back to cd's and bought a few newies, so sicck of digital shit ,don't even know or can be bothered somehow organizing it , using cds again last few days in the new car has been absolute heaven, thk god it has a cd player, since my little yamaha blew up haven't been able to play any, my other cars cd clapped out too. My stereo was cd and digital , thinking maybe l should find that combo again but l dunno, agree with you man l miss a decent bloody old school stereo.

That 44g drum speaker luckily for everyone was at least in my room which was a bungalow down back of yard joined to the garage but you could hear it 2blocks down street.

Haven't started looking for a newy yet, when l finish the cabin will see what's about. Dunno if pioneer are still any good but always loved a good pioneer, beautiful sound.

Re: Depressed with my situation, later 50s

2 ideas

  • There are tons of vintage stereos on ef b as people realise worth something
  • Use car stereo w transformer set-up

@mrmista prob put decent set up in car and use that then make something

There are still books on making speakers 🔊 if get old needs to be worth fixing

Endless individual speakers on internet plus pre made boxes might have trouble getting full size guess could put in bigger box hey

Re: Depressed with my situation, later 50s

@mrmista Still a little kid inside and love sitting in trains. Cars are great for exploring off the beaten track tho...

I like Radiohead and my brother bought me Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon, in the 70s. The poor brother, but we were both rich, lol, cos we were poor and had to WORK to earn money a lot, as little kids. Great bands.

@ENKELI @TAB I got JBL Studio Monitors but mostly I dont bother listening to anything loud, so they are complete waste of money for me. lol, but my son uses JBL. I just go for acoustic and live, and anything quiet enough for my laptop speaker. Back in the day there was the subwoofer, but that day was 40 years ago.

I just noticed that the brands for washing machines are the same as audio speakers! Says more about the levels of expertise (not) and capitalism than good Hi Fidelity Sound. imho lol

Gonna do some music prac later ...

Re: Depressed with my situation, later 50s

@Appleblossom @mrmista @TAB Japanese audio equipment has always been a good choice as they have exceptional engineering and sound quality.

My mum had a National stereo system, it had a record player and AM radio. She bought it in the 70's when National was still a Japanese company and the speakers were huge. It was still working when she finally gave it away to a friend who loved "antique" audio equipment in the 2010's.

I have Logitech speakers for my laptop, they were hand me downs from my brother and Tabby and I have discussed them previously. They have a sub woofer and 5 speakers and pack a punch better than some stereo systems!

What blew me away about these corporations was when I saw Mitsubishi brand refrigerators and air conditioners! I mean, they only make cars don't they?!!
