Responsibility for others driving me to breakdown

Responsibility for others driving me to breakdown

Just been crying and had a mental breakdown. I've been good with money, spending within my means, but parent keeps asking for more and more for things not needed, basically extras. Sibling going to uni and not getting a job, when I was in uni, I had to pay for everything myself except for the first semester which was paid with the help of my parent. Worked my butt off and managed to do it. Now that my sibling is in uni, I'm always asked to help out to get a job to help the family for a trip later this year and sibling is not getting a job or hard enough. I am so tired, everything always come back to me having to do stuff. I worked since I was legally able too and basically have almost always been employed, I don't overspend and just want a relax life, but everybody is pushing the responsibility onto me. I am so tired and my mental just finally cracked. I just don't know how to feel, I just want to escape this

for a while.

How do I stop this feeling and just escape for a while, like I just need a break for a couple of days from this stress of hey you need to get a job to pay for all of these extra things that we did.

Its just so exhausting since I myself don't spend much on myself. It's always payments for other people.

I guess in terms of the job stuff I'm just going to say no to them since I'm so tired and am supposed to be on medical leave from the doctor to fix health up anyways, but they still want me to get a job instead of focusing on my health. Though just need a way to manage the stress and thoughts of them brining up topics of finances etc, I'm tired of this.

Hey @cozy_726 ,

I'm sorry to hear how hard it is for you.

I'm sensing that you feel there are unrealistic expectations of you when it is different for your sibling.

Have you shared your concerns with your family? Sometimes, when they are so 'used to it', they may not even realise how much you are struggling.

Please know you are not alone. Thank you for sharing.

Hope today is a better day for you.

@cozy_726 that is a hard space to be in.

I have similar thoughts about immediate family. (Wife and children),

I have tried to put down some thoughts but have nothing helpful other than, I hear you.

I have in the past taken medical leave but ended up right back at work due to unrealistic expectations of those around me regarding wants and needs.

And understand it is not always as easy as just saying no when relationships matter. 😢

Thinking of you @Determined . You're amazing. Your patience, endurance, love and care over the years has really shone through. There are many who are willing to do what you do.

I really take my hat off to you and hope you are doing okay.

Thanks @tyme

Ok at a stretch ATM.

No 1 son on edge of a break down

This is causing conflict.

Kind of why this post resonated.

Awww. Does your son live with you @Determined ? I can only imagine how hard it is for you. It's like you are carrying the whole family.

@tyme

Yes he is still at home.

He has a disability so will always be at home with us. On the verge of quitting his job if he doesn't get sacked first. Seems to have checked out. Only interested in his stupid computer games.

Ahhh... that sounds so hard @Determined . That's a lot for you to carry. However, good on him that he has a job. I hope he finds a way to keep it.

I wish I could give you a magic wand to 'fix' everything.

Please look after yourself.

Re: Responsibility for others driving me to breakdown

Hi @tyme thanks for reaching out, I've spoken about it to them before and even my dad has mentioned about extra stuff like you don't have to if you don't want to, but that was a while ago and it's always the feeling of letting them down as well, I guess sort of expected obligations of the family. In terms of the sibling, it's been hammered down that he also needs to find a job, but he is struggling to find one and has a mental disability as well which impacts him, so I feel even more inclined to help out because the last thing I want is a member of my family to struggle financially.

Thank you again for reaching out to me @tyme, it just feels so hard when so much responsibility is on your shoulders, like extra responsibility I guess, just a ton of weight to let go off.

I'm also doing a whole lot better today, no breakdowns and just trying to not bring up the topic of finances to my family as the last thing I want is for my mind to go into a spiral of calculating how much we'd need for how much amount of time which is a bad side effect that I have, just a lot of overthinking.

I'll be going out today as well and maybe grab a drink at a cafe to clear my mind.
