Son in hospital again, broken heart

Son in hospital again, broken heart

Hi, just needed to tell someone. I have 3 beautiful sons. They were all going well, doing well at school, had good friends. Then two became mentally ill 3 years ago. They were 18 and 21. The younger one dropped out of year 12 (he was topping classes before that). The older one left uni. Then the older one hit rock bottom, but survived and is now on the rocky road to recovery. He has to deal with lots of med side effects. Long way to go, but, he never refused treatment.

The younger one however has had anosognosia from the start and still does not believe he needs any form of help. He has been involuntarily admitted to hospital 3 times before (he was dangerous) and again today. He has been on various depot meds which haven't worked or have had nasty side effects. The one he's on now obviously isn't working. He is elevated, and speaks constantly and angrily. A lot of what he says doesn't make sense.

He has to have depot because he won't take tablets. He may need ECT next.

Of course he is irate to be in there again. We (husband and I) are very upset he is in there too (although we had to organise the ambulance). There's almost nothing to do on the psych ward here and the staff hide behind glass most of the time - there is one small opening to speak to them through. I feel my son's traumas are multiplying.

My heart is covered in wounds and scars. My sister and brother didn't bother to visit him last time in hospital (they live close). He was there for a month.

I bet if it was cancer ppl would rush in from all over. The double standard for ppl with mental illness makes me want to slam my fist through a wall. I won't though, I need my hand.

Just so sad, and I really love my kids.

@ForestPhoenix I know the heartbreak of a son being hospitalised and the system being problematic. These can be difficult times for young men. Yes the traumas can add up. What is the best thing to is not so easy to discern.

Yes, broader family can be unsupportive... hmmmm. each family has its dynamics.

I hope your boys find a path hrough it all....

@ForestPhoenix thanks for sharing. I don't have any words for you but I can listen. I invite you to vent here further if you wish. I will hear you and I genuinely want to hear your broken heart scream into the void.

Release that tension and then get back to doing the work in front of you.

Re: Son in hospital again, broken heart

Hey @ForestPhoenix

I am so deeply sorry to hear that you are carrying this level of heartbreak. It made me feel incredibly sad and heartbroken for you to read about the 'wounds and scars' on your heart, especially when you are fighting so hard for your sons in a system that often feels so cold and inaccessible 💚

The double standard you mentioned is a devastating reality. You are absolutely right, if this were a physical ailment, that waiting room would be full. The silence from family and the 'glass walls' at the hospital only add an extra layer of isolation to an already exhausting situation. It is a testament to your love that you continue to be your son's advocate, even when he cannot see the need for help.

Anosognosia is a uniquely heavy burden for a parent to bear, and having to be the one to call the ambulance is a trauma in itself. Please know that your anger is justified, your sadness is seen, and the devotion you have for your children is profound. I hope you can find even a small moment today to breathe and be gentle with yourself. You are doing an impossible job with an incredible amount of heart 💚
