How does one restablish confidence in themselves?

How does one restablish confidence in themselves?

How do we restablish confidence in ourselves?

I'm quite happy to give advice to other people and console a friend if they were feeling discouraged. Yet, why is it so hard for me to deal that same kindness to myself?

I constantly find myself thinking "it should be like this..I should be working more.." , grinding myself into the ground, yet, why can't I grant myself that compassion to say, hey it's ok, you're finding your feet again. You are valued...

What does one do.. to re establish themselves? To not feel the need to be asking questions all the time?

I'm not sure if we should disclose age here so I won't... but next weekend I'm hitting a milestone and I thought it would be all exciting by now but I feel the opposite...

Hey @Rosepetal96

Thank you for being so open about this. There is a strange irony in being able to offer a lighthouse to others while feeling like you're treading water yourself. Please know that you aren't alone in that; many of the most compassionate people are the harshest on themselves.

Re-establishing confidence doesn't usually happen in one big leap; it happens in small, quiet shifts. I wanted to share with you a few perspectives that might help you bridge the gap between the kindness you give others and the kindness you deserve.

I know you mentioned you'd be able to console a friend. When that "I should be working more" voice starts, try to literally imagine a friend saying that to you. You'd literally tell them that their value isn't tied to their productivity. Try to "borrow" the words you would say to them and say them to yourself out loud. It feels clunky at first, but it helps retain the brain.

The word "should" is often a heavy backpack we didn't choose to put on. When you catch a "should," try replacing it with "I could, but right now I need ..." This shifts you from a place of failure to a place of agency and self-care.

Milestones often act like mirrors, highlighting the gap between where we "thought" we'd be and where we are. It's okay if you don't feel excited yet. Sometimes the best way to honour a milestone isn't a big celebration, but a quiet acknowledgement of the resilience it took to get you there.

You mentioned asking questions a lot. That often comes from a place of seeking external permission to be okay. Try giving yourself micro permissions. Permission to rest for 10 minutes, permission to dislike a task, or permission to just be without producing anything.

You are navigating a period of finding your feet, and that process is inherently wobbly. That doesn't mean you've lost your way; it just means the ground you're on is new.

Be as gentle with yourself as you would be with any of us here.

@MatchaToad , thank you for your kind words, I definitely should be trying saying these things out loud. If I catch myself saying "I should..." I'm going to try swapping it out for " I could, but right now I need to take my time to focus on strengthening myself.

And I've successfully managed to make it through from Tuesday to Friday a little more compassionate towards myself. I'm learning not to push too hard with things I physically cannot achieve right now, and someone kind to me, highlighted, that's a brave realisation to make.

I had a hair cut and foil refresh today, so hopefully that helps renew me for a new week of learning and opportunity ☺️

@Rosepetal96

It is so lovely to hear from you, and I am genuinely smiling at that Tuesday-to-Friday success. Swapping out 'I should' for 'I could, but right now I need...' is such a powerful shift. It moves you from a place of pressure to a place of choice and self-care 💚

That realisation you have, that it's brave to acknowledge what you physically cannot achieve right now, is absolutely spot on. It's not 'giving up'; it's strategic resting so you can find your feet again.

I am so glad that you treated yourself to that haircut and foil refresh. There is something about a fresh look that can truly help us reset our headspace. It really sounds like the perfect way to prepare for the week ahead.

Even if the excitement isn't there yet, you're clearly doing the hard work of building a kinder foundation for yourself. I hope you can take that renewed feeling into next week 💚

Thank you @MatchaToad , I'm off to see a musical today! Picked out a nice outfit and did my makeup and am wearing a pair of boots for the first time in around 7 months. Feels insanely different! Hope you have a lovely weekend 😊

I am absolutely thrilled for you @Rosepetal96. 💚

There truly is something so transformative about the first wear of a favourite pair of shoes after a long break. It sounds like you're stepping into this with so much renewed energy!

Putting in that effort for yourself with the outfit and makeup is such a beautiful act of self-compassion and would be a massive confidence boost!

Enjoy every second of the show and that feeling of being back out in the world. You've definitely earned this sunny patch in your weather ☀️💚
