Support animals

Hello this is my second post here. I have recently spent some time in hospital, and found that through it all, one of the hardest parts was not simply dealing with my illness, not being away from home for a long period of time, not adapting to awlful medications - but missing my cat. My eighteen year old support cat. She waited patiently on my bed the entire time I was gone. When I came home the sweet sound of her purring filled the room, and I found happiness. And relief.

Does anyone else find peace in their animals? And miss them greatly when you're gone? I find that consoling in animals is one of the best therapies out there.

Re: Support animals

Hey @Musicgirl ,

I was swinging past and thought I'd pop in to day hi. I hope things are better now that you are out of hospital.

I have a dog, which was actually bought for my niece, to help her with her anxiety. The dog is shared between the two households and we have different responsibilities. I generally take Ruby for walks and that's therapeutic for me.

I know there are others who have wonderful companions who may like to share their insights @Bow @MissGremlin @PeppyPatti @Captain24 @Emelia8 @Cuddlebear

I'm glad your support animal helps you @Musicgirl

Re: Support animals

Hi @Musicgirl

I have to little furbabies that are my world. The first time I was in hospital a had a massive breakdown because I missed them. My youngest was only 4 months old at that time. I couldn’t see or be around another animal.

My second time wasn’t as bad but all I talked about was them. When I’m not with them it’s like a part of my is missing.

I would not be here without them. I’m sitting here right now with one my lap and the other next to me.

Re: Support animals

@Musicgirl I’ve had many a cat over the years. I find them very therapeutic. I think they are good at reading how you are and when you need a little bit more loving. They are pretty forgiving too.

i also foster cats and kittens. I currently have 3x 7 week old kittens. They give me a bit of purpose and reason to not stay in bed all day. I get to play with them, give them lots of snuggles and watch them grow and develop their own little personalities and once they are big enough to be desexed I give them back and they go up for adoption.

Re: Support animals

Hi @Musicgirl and welcome to the Forum's 😊

Sorry to hear of your recent hospital admission. But happy you had your beautiful sweet cat there to welcome you home again.

You are right, our much loved animals offer so much comfort, support and happiness to our everyday lives.

I have a little dog, a 2 yo Cavoodle called Hannah. She is my everything, and my constant companion and comes everywhere with me. Only last week she passed her PAT (public access test) and is now my fully accredited PTSD Assistance Dog.

Our pets do so much for us, they are such selfless little creatures. 💕

Re: Support animals

Hello @Musicgirl

I really like your name.

I want to put my two cents in ……. but let me tell you I so feel for you.

it makes me feel a little frustrated concerning hospitals but also — thank goodness we live in Australia. I know there are other countries that have Medicare type help but.
missing your cat.

sweetheart.
yes I’m speechless someone as vulnerable as you can’t get someone to either bring your cat for a couple hours a day or vice versa

Are you able to write a note and ask anyone to bring it to your doctor ? Is this something you will do ?
my dog is one year old and he’s nibbling my feet …….

you don’t need to read this it’s fine. It’s an issue and I’m managing it.

I have had a major head injury 40 years ago. I went to see my go today and she said I don’t need to see a psychiatrist to fix up my medication even though they have not seen me for 40 years. Wtf ?
yep. Because in the hospitals records I haven’t brought up any alarming bells. Even though I have gone to psychiatric hospitals and done some weird things

Re: Support animals

@Musicgirl 100% 😊🥰.

There is not enough recognition of the psychosocial support of trusted/bonded animals, i think.

I have a really mixed feelings with my dogs. They are so exhausting and feel a burdon. But if i go out somewhere, i always wish i could take them with me because i feel better with them there even though its not logical. (And i dont have social anxiety lol !)

Re: Support animals

@Musicgirl

I have always shared my life with cats and dogs.

the love and companionship from them I’ve felt and experienced, words can’t describe.

I know having a cat in a hospital setting would be very challenging. Even so, there needs to be more research into positive impact on people in hospital and nursing home settings who are able to have the cat/s and/or dog/s with them.

I have 2 young cats who at times test my patience. At the same time They are an important part of my life and I love the 2 of them as they are. Without my cats I doubt I would still be here. They give so much unconditional love.

Each time I go into hospital my cats have to go to a cattery as I have no other options. I hear you about being away from your furry family and am sorry you have experienced that.😿😿
