Something’s not right

update: it’s all good ig

update: it’s all good ig

So my mum and I don't have a great relationship, and everytime I bring up some stuff with her that I'm struggling with that she would keep suggesting or bringing up with me, she would keep dismissing them by telling me to stop saying that worried thing and that I need to deal with it or toughen up basically.

FYI, I live alone in a student accomodation, I've moved out of my parents house back in October 2024, and I don't ever plan on moving back to live with them ever again.

As of recently, I was thinking of wanting to block her and over the course of almost a year (I would say) I brought up with her quite countless times that I wish we don't connect/talk to each other anymore and that she should accept that and stop talking to me, I normally bring up things like "stop being my mother" or "I wish I was not your daughter" to her. This is because everytime she brings up something to me that she wants me to have or do that I completely disagree with (that she thinks otherwise), it triggers me to THAT extent because it very much feels like she's pressuring or forcing me to do what she tells me or suggests I should do. And because the way she deals with and think things is completely different to how I deal with them and think things, that's where the clash between us occurs.

what happened between us just this late afternoon (which is what brings to me writing this post) is that on WhatsApp my mum asked me when I'm starting school (as in university face-to-face) I said to her why is she asking me that and she goes like "you should start at school. Because you need to learn to socialise with people. More fun at school". and my mum herself knowing CLEARLY AND VERY WELL that I've been struggling with socialising and connecting with people at any social settings even when I was a child and a teen -- considering I had selective/situational mutism at school from when I was 1 and a half years of age until the age of 12 and a half, it's really sad how she still thinks this way and doesn't want to accept the fact that what I've been dealing with and what I choose to do is what I'm more comfortable doing. The way I see it myself is that if I know this is something I've been struggling for most of my life and that I'm not comfortable with doing ever again, then I have the rights to not continue with it. I even told her specifically that she doesn't understand how autism works and that she doesn't have the rights to tell me what she thinks I should do. And then she came up with this VERY lovely (I'm saying "lovely" sarcastically) response saying "stop saying you're autistic, you' are not. you just need to learn how to connect with people, that's all I need/want from you" which was obviously INCREDIBLY invalidating and dismissive to my needs! like what kind of a parent says that to their own child who has clearly developed neurodivergent/autistic traits as a young child myself. So then that triggered me to tell her "I just wish you don't continue to want to connect with me. why did I ever come out of your tummy?? I just wish I had a different mother" and then I told her to stop controlling me to which she said she wasn't controlling, but she really is. Then she also said "doesn't matter if it didn't work (me connecting with others didn't work) for you but you can still go to school like other people do. you don't need to talk to people". After that that's when I was like "seriously, I wish I can block you forever so you can stop talking to me and stop connecting with me. you seriously have no rights to tell me what you think I should do just because you never experienced it yourself." to which she responded with "it's okay if you block mum, you can't get any food" -- to provide a bit of the context with this last line, basically since I moved out of home starting from October 2024, I've been visiting my parents house in order to collect my mum's cooked food for me to eat on a weekly basis, and because I don't cook my own food and all that, that's been part of why I've been collecting her food since I'm used to eating them (plus, it's better to eat cooked food than to get meals from restaurants). Anyways, but now I do need to get used to not being able to eat and get any of her cooked food anymore in that case, as well as getting used to not seeing her ever again. Almost everytime we go out shopping together, I've never been really happy in general everytime I'm with her.

Also, this whole situation I've mentioned above isn't the only situation that's causing me to wanting to block her though. Another major one was when both last year and in 2024 when she wanted to introduce me to a guy that she made my aunt (in our ethnic country) to go around and find some guys that my mum herself would like me to meet and potentially be with (according to my mum being in my 20s is the age where I'm already meant to be in a relationship, which I 1000000% disagree with) and what's even worse is that she wanted me or preferred that I have a partner "to look up to" in the purpose of him taking care of me and all that when we get older, as well as a partner who is of the same ethnicity as us (and not anyone that's not of our ethnicity). Like I really wish she can listen to everything I've been saying to her however it just seems that she really hasn't listened to anything I tell her and she doesn't understand the impact that her continuing to do this and not listening to me has on our relationship in a negative way. There's so much about her that I could go on with that's causing the strain in our relationship but I'm just gonna leave it all here for now.

FYI, My mum comes from an asian background and she was born and raised there and obviously the way she deals with things (even if they're bad) is completely different to how I deal with them myself. Same goes with perspectives.

So should I block her guys? it's fine if it means that I can't go to her house to pick up her cooked food, nor even willing or able to see her ever again (and I need to get used to that really). And she needs to get used to that too lmao because it's clear that no matter what I tell her or try to convince her to think or understand otherwise, she will always stick to what she believes in that she wants to apply that onto me with.

Perhaps I might consider on moving interstate at some point too in that case if that will ever happen, who knows.

Re: should I consider on cutting ties with my mum?

@Blackcloud

I really appreciate your honesty and for clarifying where you stand. I understand that "grey rocking" and being polite do not feel right for you; that's so okay! I suppose when someone is constantly invalidating your identity, staying polite can feel like you're betraying yourself, and it's very valid to feel that being defensive is a necessary form of self-protection in those heated moments.

I'm glad to hear that you've already got your support system in place with the uni disability services and your own therapists. Having people you trust who actually get and understand autism makes a world of difference when your family dynamic is the opposite.

Since you've been telling her for nearly a year that you want to disconnect and she still isn't hearing it, it sounds like you are reaching a point where actions will have to speak louder than words.

Sending you so much strength!

Re: should I consider on cutting ties with my mum?

It sounds beneficial to both of your MH to terminate contact. She treats you badly. And you treat her badly

Continuing that is a lose/lose situation

Re: should I consider on cutting ties with my mum?

@Blackcloud Meals on Wheels is another alternative for a food service.

They can also do meals for people with food allergies/sensitivities and I'm pretty sure they are reasonably affordable.

Stay safe and being your amazing self ❤️

Re: should I consider on cutting ties with my mum?

I appreciate it @AnnoyedSheDevil I’m not sure if you’ve seen/read my other post in the previous page of the thread where I tagged both AlwaysMyself and Spirit_Healer on, but it seems like it’s all good now. Also, my mums always a good person overall, so it would make me sad and quite regretful if I did decide to fully cut ties with her, compared to if she was like the complete opposite. Anyway I just hope that she actually doesn’t plan on asking me and telling me those things ever again to make me feel like mentally comfortable with her again.

Re: should I block my mum?

@AlwaysMyself I’ve had a read of your 2 responses from last night and wow I’m impressed by how much you have put your thought into everything you needed to convey and mention! even how you were able to set some boundaries with your dad in a firm but polite way and knowing to walk away from the interaction instead of continuing to escalate the interaction into arguments. I think that’s something that I might or will consider/have to do myself the next time my mum says things to me that I don’t wanna hear. I really enjoyed reading that whole post you wrote, it made me consider on what I should or might need to adopt with next time myself, and you also made my day too! 😊 so I really really thank you so much for making my day, what can I even do without you??❤️🥺🥹🫂❤️🌸 I’m glad to hear that you have a great relationship with your step mother 😊

and with the response & blocking/unblocking suggestion, if you read the post I tagged you on this thread earlier day, you can see I mentioned that I have sent my mum that sort of text last night before I considered blocking her or wanting to cut ties with her, and from the looks of it after I did that, it looks like things are going good. I felt so relieved after sending her that message. But not gonna lie my heart did beat the moment I saw that she was typing back soon after lol but I got through it with a good ending!!💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

your story and advices are really helpful my lovely friend!!🥺❤️🫂🌸

Re: should I block my mum?

Ahh soo good to hear your mum was accepting of your message to her @Blackcloud ! 😁😍

I really do hope she is able to keep this in mind when you do see her and chat with her, and that if she does slip up (like my dad would) that when she is reminded she will respond appropriately and stop (even if she doesn't apologise for the boundary-crossing verbally - if she's anything like my dad that way lol). And yep, totally hear you on the learning to keep calm and polite to prevent escalation thing -- it is not a quick-learn, and not something happens overnight, and sometimes it may never be easy to choose to do -- even after all these years, I get a lot of emotions come up when my dad says something judging (sometimes he says it about someone else, without realising that it also applies to me) and ever ounce of my "but I want justice! I want fairness! I want to be heard!" throws a full blast of emotion into my being, and I have to acknowledge it and remind myself that reacting out of it will not help at all (he will not listen to it if I am angry, he will not take it on board) -- and instead either calmly let him know that I see things differently, or (if I feel a bit cheeky oopps!) tell him that what he is saying also applies to me then, or else divert the conversation to a different topic. This last option (diversion) is always the safest bet if I am feeling really emotional about it - because I know the other two paths can still lead to further hurt and dismissal - even though they also potentially have the benefit of me being able to have a voice I so much want to have if only he would listen.

I am glad my experience-sharing has been of benefit to you. It makes a much better "outcome" for my life experiences to know that what I have learned through my own trial and error and pain and trying again lol, that this can help guide someone else too and encourage them that they can grow the strength over time also if they want to. (I won't promise it is easy; if it is though - I am happily jealous lol. I wish it had been for me!)

Re: should I block my mum?

@AlwaysMyself oh absolutely not - I don’t think it’ll be easy (in response to the last line in your response)!

yeah, I guess for me i feel it depends on how I think she’s gonna respond whether I say it to her calmly or respond with explosion whenever she brings up something I’m not comfortable with. I’ll just leave it here if that’s ok since I’m about to log off this forum for the night 🙂

wish you a nighty night my friend ❤️

@Blackcloud I've been wondering how boundaries with you mum have been going? (But only if you want to give an update) 🤗

Re: should I block my mum?

Hi @AlwaysMyself sooo sorry for the really late response to this! So far, the boundaries seem to be going well for me. Since then, I’ve been blocking my mum for several days a week and only unblocking her just to text her regarding when I can pick up the food from her house. I go to her house to pick up the food for just once a week rather than twice a week. I haven’t gone out anywhere (shopping) with her ever since, even though she had asked me about it several times over the weeks and i refuse it without hesitation each time. 😊 I know it’s better for me to straight up refuse without hesitation instead of feeling like I have to come with her while feeling worse when I’m with her. Having parents is not easy, but then I still need her as part of my informal supports (only for picking up food purposes + her to give me other essentials I need that I can’t buy myself)
