Feeling upset

Feeling upset

Hi all,

Hope everyone's weekend is good and you are good.

I'm feeling upset & guilty today as my husbands eye condition is more than likely due to stress which I feel it's my fault as since with 1 of my latest diagnosis of bipolar he has had too carry all the load and try and think for himself plus for me

And then everything else my brother has done to my husband plus to me.

Tuesday he goes for a procedure which means I will have to drive home & my concentration is not good, I have to really focus that day.

Am saying positive things to myself and breathing to help myself.

One question is can you still drive if you live in NSW with bipolar?

I don't know what will happen if I am manic, I am starting to notice now when I am stressed I start hearing things (auditory voices, I think that's what they call it).

Hey @Abby6_2025 ,

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's condition.

I wonder if @Captain24 can answer some of the questions you have raised?

I don't know about the rules and regulations around driving, however, I can say that from my own experiences, when I struggled with mania, I ran into the most trouble on the road and really should've had my licence suspended.

So I personally don't recommend driving when going through acute mental health.

Re: Feeling upset

Hi @Abby6_2025

I have never said anything to RMS about my bipolar, as far as I’m concerned it’s not their business. But I have never had any tell me that I can’t drive. Most of the time I’m a safe driver. My concern is when I’m manic. My driving is very out of character. I have to drive 40 minutes to work on a country road so it can get pretty scary.

I don’t hear voices so I don’t know what that is like. But when I’m manic my psych has said to me to do the 5 things grounding exercise while I’m driving and to also do breathing as well. My breathing go to is box breathing. These both help me concentrate. To keep me focused on safe driving.

Not sure if that helps but that’s what gets me through.

Hi @Captain24

Thank you for the information

My physciatrist has told me now not to drive due to my poor memory and psychosis.

It's official I now have Bipolar 1.

Re: Feeling upset

@Captain24 awww thats so cool remeber to reflect and think about how its helping i forget all the time. Well not when driving i dont drive yet. But you can definitly do these exercises when driving? Boxed breathing and use the 5 sences?

Re: Feeling upset

Box breathing is when you breathe in for 4 counts, hold for four counts, breathe out for 4 counts and hold again for 4 counts. Repeat it a few times until you feel calmer.

5 senses is 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can touch, 2 things you can smell, one thing you can taste. It helps take your mind of things as you are concentrating on something else.
