Schizophrenia - support for when a family member resists

Schizophrenia - support for when a family member resists

Hi there - after any support please (schizophrenia)

I have a family member who has been dealing with mental health issues for the past 10 years. About 7 years ago it got to a point where he had to be involuntarily admitted into an in-patient ward which was really traumatic for him from this experience. He is terrified of that system and so is his carer - my Mum who is with him who is against conventional support. She has been trying to help him for the past 7-years with alternative methods but he has been declining and now she is distancing herself from her family. He was medicated for 3 years where he showed signs of 'himself' again but the side-effects weren't good and after time his GP weaned him off the dosage. He went overseas and the medication stopped - he's been unmedicated now for 4 years, lost his job, and behaviour has become increasingly strange/out of character which has made other people feel uncomfortable & concerned. You can't talk to him about it because he speaks very little and is in denial / resistant to help.

Does anyone have any advice as to what to do? Or places in Victoria that you could suggest for support? The triage team is trying to assess him with his blessing but we don't know if he will agree. What is possible in these scenarios?

Thank you very much in advance.

Re: Schizophrenia - support for when a family member resists

Hi @April20 ! Welcome to the forums! 🙂👋

Perhaps he's "resistant to help", as you say, because he's desperate not to relive his previous bad experiance in the psych ward? I'm guessing that the first time it happened, it didn't just happen suddenly? Like, he went down a road of 'seeking help', that ultimately lead to somebody deciding to commit him?

If that's the case, then it's easy to see how he mightn't want to even take the initial steps down that road again.

I was never committed myself, but I have a similar aversion to 'seeking help', because I know from experiance where that road can lead, and it's an ugly place.

Do you think it might help to ask him if there's anything you could do for him, that isn't in the vein of trying to set him up with traditional help services?

You mentioned he lost his job. Do you know what sort of job he would like to have? And if so, is there any way you could make some arrangements to get him a job similiar to what he's hoping for?

Thank you so much for the response. We spoke with him today and offered lots of support - reiterating how we want to see the best version of him, etc but he says he is fine and doesn't want help. I really appreciate your ideas, thank you for sharing. I just worry that he is really unwell and even after speaking with the Triage team, they did say he has had a relapse and if we don't do anything, it will just get worse - but we also can't do anything if he doesn't agree to it...really tricky!

Hello @April20 .

I get how hard it is

I'm sorry none of the SANE staff have replied to welcome you.

I'll tag @Shaz51 a volunteer community guide to invite you into the family and carers space.

Take care of yourself - you need support too.

hello @April20

sending you hugs and sitting with you my friend

support for when a family member resists is very hard and I am sending you lots of understanding hugs as my husband has MI issues and has thrown all his meds out

then he did not sleep at all

got him to see a doctor who gave him ne meds which he has now cut in half by himself and has cancelled all other help

it is hard for caring family members to see this

and we need to look after ourselves too

this is a link to click on to called Coping Toolbox ( what is in yours to help you cope )
