I am a chronic over-reacter?

I am a chronic over-reacter?

I'm not sure what to say, but I was just wondering what other people's experiences were with coping with past events.

The thing is, nothing that bad has happened to me. I mean there were some not so great experiences, but in the grand scheme of things not as big a deal as my resultant reaction is. And I think my therapist thinks I'm a massive whinger. *I* think I'm a massive whinger.

Why do I react in such a massive way after relatively minor events, when people on here have gone through so much worse and still managed to live their lives?

What's wrong with me and what's caused me to be such an over-reacter. Why do I get anxiety at the drop of a hat. Why am I so stuck with aspects of my life?

Sorry, I don't expect anyone to solve my problems, just feel like letting it out.

The impression I've been given is that my schizoaffective is biochemical based and my anxiety and stuff is more due to me being me.
I think I will bring it up with him, but I'm scared that he might think that this type of therapy shouldn't be done by someone that has psychosis and dissociates and he'll send me off to someone else.
I've been told that I shouldn't have therapy for my childhood stuff cause it will just cause episodes of my illness. But I want it dealt with. I want it over. I've suffered long enough. I want a proper life like everyone else has. I want a job and a partner and a family and I don't think I'll get that without dealing with my childhood stuff.
I've got some strategies to deal with the anxiety, but it's just constant these days.

@Former-Member, Talking o your therapist about your concern is a great thing. Even mention that you are concerned that he will send you to someone else and that you are not comfident with seeing anyone else at this point.

Dealing with you past can bring up some stuff that you may not expect but I agree that it is one of the healing paths that some of us must go down in order to heal.

good luck

@Former-Member your brave just coming onto the forums and explaing your situation to begin with 🙂

your anxiety is perfectly natural for someone in your situation, but you can be diagnosed eith more than one mental health condition. maybe the next time you see your therapist you could ask if the anxiety is through the pscyhosis and if he says no or not really maybe you could jsut ask if there could be another mental health condition your dealing with such as GAD, (generalised anxiety disorder)
what coping strategies has your therapist given you so far?

i might be able to add to the list for you to try. it really is trial and error and practicing these methods as often as you can - i know harder said than done- but it can help

Re: I am a chronic over-reacter?

Hi @Former-Member,
There other potential diagnoses, but I don't want to talk about them right now. I've ordered a copy of my hospital notes so I can find out, cause I'm not sure what's actually going on. I'm also not sure what happened for most of my hospital experience. I think I was too out of it.
For anxiety I do PMR which is really helpful and deep breathing exercises. But I don't practice them as often as I should.
I'm not suffering from any symptoms of psychosis or depression at the moment. But talking about stuff in therapy combined with an anniversary and a whole bunch potential bad news - I might have a form of heart disease, I might be going blind and I might have MS. And that's just me, not including my family.
And for some reason, since I got sick last year I've just had almost constant anxiety. My hands shake to much to write with a pen. Let alone the pipetting etc I need to do for uni.
I'm just super anxious and super irritable.
Which probably means I need to do lots more PMR and exercise, but gosh- where do you find the time and energy.
Anyway, if you have any anxiety fixers, I'm all ears!!!!

ok so PMR thats like muscle relaxation isnt it and deep breathing yeah? @Former-Member

Re: I am a chronic over-reacter?

ok yeah, somethings that work for others may not work for you so just keep that in mind ok, so PMR isnt the end all and be all if you arent finding its working. maybe talk to your therapist about other forms as well...

i can give you a few suggestions though even if they dont work, so youve already got deep breathing and muscle relaxation.

Have you tried different distractions? mindullness- there are many ways to do it? meditation? exercises?

thought challanging? recognising triggers? journalling? do other self care activities? maintain a healthy lifestyle?

have you tried any of these or need more information. i can expand on any of these if not all so whatever you need- just didnt want to give you information you already had 🙂 @Former-Member

Re: I am a chronic over-reacter?

I hate to sound like a whinger know-it-all, but I've tried most of these.
PMR is pretty good for me, but I'm so lazy I don't do it often enough. Same with exercise.
I HATE mindfulness, but I think that's just me.
I haven't journaled in a while, and maybe I should start again.
I guess I want to know exactly- physiologically and psychologically why my anxiety response is so huge in some situations. And then how to stop it.
And I think I need to put in time and effort to PMR and exercise - which are the two that have helped me the most in the past.
What other ways can I get my autonomic nervous system to calm the f down?
Mods is lobotomy of the amygdala a thing????
Thanks for the suggestions @Former-Member, if you have any more insights I'd love to hear them. ☺️

Re: I am a chronic over-reacter?

i dont really like mindfulness either but then i realsied i could do it other ways without labelling it as mindfulness. @Former-Member but you should continue to do PMR and deep breathign if you found them to be helpful 🙂 and remember to keep in contact with your therapist or helpline of gp or all of them to continue the support you deserve

your not whinging at all! you asked for help thats all. 🙂

um ill have a think about what else there is...

have you consisdered going tto a naturopath? they ahve heaps of stuff that heps to calm your body internally and can often give you a specific her or a mix of herbs in a tablet or sometimes you get get store brought things that they reccomend as well... so just a thought.

i know how hard it is to try and focus when your constantly in panic mode but maybe see a naturopath and getting things to calm the actual nervous system then it might help you to be able to cope better if that makes sense.?

Re: I am a chronic over-reacter?

Just had to share that all my scary symptoms appear to be a combination of side effects of my medications! Yay!!! I'm not going blind, they are pretty sure I don't have scary neurological problems.
Except the weird heart disease..... I hear back about that one tomorrow. But as they haven't contacted me, and I've waited a few weeks for this appointment, I'm going with a no.
Just so happy, had to share!
