Something’s not right

Getting an enormous pay cut for Christmas.

Getting an enormous pay cut for Christmas.

Between not getting sick leave, not getting annual leave and not being paid for Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, I will have lost well above a week's wages, over only two weeks.

I have been really pretty angry and depressed. People generally just say "well, that's how it is being a casual employee", I'm like "YES I KNOW, but it doesn't make it right." I have always been paid for Christmas, this is my first time being casual.

And then when you do become permanent, there's a consistent pay cut. I need to get a new job. It's not about the money, though, I have got money, it's about the principle, and the refusal of anyone to understand how much it angers me or question why casuals don't get paid for Christmas. I know it's because we get paid more per hour, but that's not an answer, the days where you're not allowed to work should be special. Especially Christmas and New Year's.

People just say "life is unfair, but you need to channel your anger differently". I have been gifted hardship, an opportunity to practice Stoicism. What more could a man want for Christmas?

Just to confirm, that's sarcasm.

It's just sad. I can't let this ruin the whole couple of weeks for me, but I hate it.

I feel bad, because it is that time of year. I usually enjoy the holidays, but I am not in a reflective mood right now. I hope you enjoy it. My family doesn't celebrate Christmas specifically, like the religious holiday, but we celebrate the social holiday.

Hi @florencefifty

Sorry to hear you are feeling pretty angry and depressed, it makes complete sense given what you’ve described and people’s comments saying ‘well, that’s how it is’ which NEVER helps. I can see that you’re trying to keep perspective and not let this ruin the holidays, even though it’s hard. You're allowed to feel frustrated. I understand you're not celebrating Christmas specifically but glad to hear you will still be getting together over this time. I hope you can go and do something nice tonight, go gentle with yourself.

Re: Getting an enormous pay cut for Christmas.

Thank you. I am feeling a lot better now.

I found a new perspective; people who lost money on the stock market or due to gambling compare any sort of financial loss to grief. I don't think it's serious enough to say I am grieving, like I have got some savings, but just hearing that comparison turned the temperature way down for me. Merry Christmas ❤️.
