Self care by growing a garden

Self care by growing a garden

A SOS to any green thumbs out there

I have always found gardening to be therapeutic and it has given me great joy. However, after a major crisis with Mr Darcy's health I have not had been able to get back into it. Have other gardeners suffered from a similar hiatus and how have you recovered and got going again?

Darcy

PS have a spot that needs filling any recommendations for a 1m high cool climate white flower plant?

@Faith-and-Hope.... yeah, I'd find that hard too. I hope you can find some way of satisfying your green fingers.

Re: Self care by growing a garden

hello @Smc

we have pretty much most of what you have mentioned...apart from the english hedgerow look which both my husband and I adore..

That more formal style does not suit this setting...which in summer heat turns dry..giving the overall area a totally different look...the gum trees surrounding the whole 5 acres take on a different look..

about 2 acres is fenced off at the back as a paddock with electric wire fencing...my husband and his daughter used to have horses...ex tent pegging horses....

then as years went on horses cared for elsewhere husband very busy with business and rotary...

next door neighbour had polo horses....so 3 of those would come to live in the paddock for a while...they were beautiful...

house set back from road....circular driveway with circle garden in front...again grassed areas die off in summer as conscious of water conservation...

we have different garden beds in circle at front and off to sides.....then at back....some fruit trees...birds eat the fruit.....have an ornamental pear which got burnt in last heatwave...we need rain..

we did have a very large vegetable garden ....all too much work for us now as we are getting older and impossible to keep up all of the work..

the paddock at the back has a row of pepper trees separating it from the back garden.....

if I was 20-30 years younger I would have a ball...

I have pots that I water...need to get out there now and do just that...

thanks for the interest...

you are certainly very knowledgable...will be looking at some of your ideas when we set up our new small garden far more manageable....hopefully with small hedgerow either side of the front pathway..

thanks @Smc

keep on with the information am loving it..

Hmmm, guerilla weeding... yeah, that works.

May I present David Zinn's creations, Sluggo (hiding) and friend- experts in gardening the concrete jungle.

@Smc

have got the dratted triangle road work sign happening at the moment...

am going off of here for a break..

sciatica flaring...pots begging to be watered...stomach rumbling lunchtime...thirst needing to be quenched...water water..

have thoroughly enjoyed chatting..hoping others reading are as fascinated with your knowledge also and can gleam some ideas....even add their own suggestions..

we might have inspired others to speak up and come up with some more intriguing ideas...

bye for now

@Former-Member, I've lived most of my life among summer dry hillsides. I suspect that my "mind's eye" garden is not quite as formal as you'd think, and apart from the areas mentioned, very much has to be able to handle straw dry conditions. 🙂

Re: Self care by growing a garden

Sort of succeeded in the two aims for today. The sweet potato is now in the big pot, and while I was planting it, I came across a couple of bearded iris rhisomes from my Dad's pots that I'd overlooked... oops. I collected those back in November! The leaves have died off but the rhisomes still look fat, and the growing tip looks healthy, so they're now in pots too and should put out new growth. Hope so. Dad had some lovely ones from specialist iris nurseries, so they may be really nice ones.

I did get some of the peaches picked up, but only a dozen or so. I put them through the blender for making peach icecream, and looking at the puree got me wondering about doing the same with some more of them, then putting it in jars to sterilise in our Fowlers kit. I hate seeing them go to waste because I've run out of time and energy for preserving, and that would be an extremely fast and easy method.
