Learning to not overwhelm people

Learning to not overwhelm people

I feel so bad when I realised, a mile a minute, that I should have been more mindful of how much I share information. That's is just generally, but it goes beyond that. I overwhelm people. I need to be more sensible. I beat myself up for affecting them.

I feel like my SANE counsellor left because of me, even though the person told me about their change of journey. I feel like I played a part in the person's decision, that I overwhelmed them. I feel like I need to really consciously put in effort to make changes I've learned from my sessions, so my counselor can see that I'm doing the work. Otherwise, I'd feel like a failure. I didn't want to disappoint them, nor myself. It's just that sometimes, it's so hard. Yes, these feelings are valid, but I'm just making excuses and need a hard kick in the arseee.

Sometimes I just have the urge to need to tell someone. Holding it in is something I need to learn. Perhaps it's ironic that I should not be posting this and keep it to myself.

I know they are counselors, but there are certain things that you can share with the appropriate people, and certain things that are best to keep to yourself, or just generalise.

This is a post I make to put my commitment into not overwhelming people. And I can be more sensible of my choices by being conscious of what I say, or release it through gym, running, meditating.

I am going to share Dr. Kristin Neff's work, which focuses on self-compassion. I think you will find it really helpful. There are lots of free self-compassion exercises and a test to see where you're at with your self-compassion: https://self-compassion.org/what-is-self-compassion/ @Silverlinin 🫶

Talking to yourself gently is a great way to show yourself some compassion. What would that look like for you?

And if you are noticing the thought of "but only I know myself better than anyone else. What I said to myself is true" is making self-compassion hard... maybe you could become curious about what part of you is saying this. Is it shame, fear, or perhaps an internalised voice? Maybe that voice is trying to keep you safe from perceived rejection or failure? (Which would be perfectly understandable and valid)

I have noticed that if we are able to seperate from that voice, just a bit, and notice where it comes from, we can give it a bit more love from the more grounded parts of ourselves. Does that make sense? 💖

Hey there @AuntGlow 😊, I went into the quiz having an idea where I might land. There weren’t many surprises, I’d like to work on self compassion 🙏
