Never too late

Never too late

My new psychologist asked me if I knew what being neurodiverse meant. I rolled my eyes and essentially explained I didn’t have a clue - in so many words. Not because I’m ignorant of the term but rather because social media and even good documentaries appear to complicate any obvious definition.

Given where I am at and the generation I belong to, every discussion and all popular terminology surrounding any mental health condition induces in me embedded anxiety loops and so I tend not to seek explanations of terminology for fear of finding out information that makes me feel worse rather than better. I did not grow up in an environment whereby I needed to diagnose myself (which seems to be the contemporary cultural practice of many) nor have a family member diagnose my mental health position. Though, I was on the pointy end of a lot of rather painful name calling…

I am seeing my psychologist regularly enough to work through any issues I may have.

But I just wanted to write something here in recognition of my being a person who for most of her life has had to live with being deeply misunderstood, exploited, ridiculed and/or rejected as a normal pattern and standard of her existence and someone who has decided it is never too late to speak up or to seek help.

Hey @Eurythmics just wanted to say that I can relate to this - I'm a firm believer that any kind of 'diagnosis' can be a helpful way to describe our experiences and guide treatment, but it should NOT be prescriptive, or exclusionary of peoples' individual experiences. I'm also someone who thinks that most 'disorders' are actually normal human responses to overwhelming trauma, not some inherent flaw that needs to be 'fixed'.

Thanks for speaking up and sharing some of your thoughts with the community. It's awesome to hear a sense of empowerment in your words, super inspiring 💜

can’t explain how much I needed to hear those words @Jynx

Meeting new psychologist in couple weeks time, trying to stay positive. Should have done it earlier, never too late to start with someone new

I'm so glad @Flutterbug9 and absolutely agree - never too late! Hope it's someone you vibe with, i.e. someone who helps you to feel safe, seen, and understood in your journey 😊🤞

Apparently the new psychologist is very popular @Jynx. Info on website about her says she works with children right up to adults. I’m hoping she is mindful of things she says.

Re: Never too late

Aye always good when you can tell they are willing to put care and consideration into their words hey @Flutterbug9. For me, a sign of a decent therapist is often to do with how at ease I feel in the space, whether they are willing to admit to mistakes, and how open and willing they are to incorporating feedback. And like... I guess how 'seen' I feel!

I have similar thoughts @Jynx. Things that haven’t happened with therapist I will now not see again.

EMDR has come into conversations on semi regular basis even though, multiple times, I’ve said I’m not comfortable with the idea.

most recently, she started reading things I’d typed (linked to schema therapy). Hadn’t read much when went from ‘this is good’ to ‘but ……. ‘ proceeding to tell me what, she felt, I had done wrong. Triggered by her again, twice out of last 3 appointments

@Flutterbug9 I'm sorry to hear that - sounds like not a good match. Some people benefit from a therapist who... takes charge, I guess? But not being listened to is not that, and sounds like you felt very unheard.

I'm off till next weekend I think, so I wanted to wish you the best for your appt - hope this one helps you to feel safe and heard, not ignored and criticised. 🤞

Im in hospital from Monday to Saturday next week, cats at cattery for few same days plus couple days after I get home
