NRL greats Braith Anasta and Kieran Foran throw their support behind SANE’s Better Off With You campaign

NRL greats Braith Anasta and Kieran Foran throw their support behind SANE’s Better Off With You campaign

“I don’t want to see any young man or any male for that matter going through it alone.” - Braith Anasta

This International Men’s Day (19 November), NRL greats Braith Anasta and Kieran Foran showed their support for SANE’s Better Off With You campaign – an evidence-informed suicide prevention and mental health resource to help men in NSW stay in the game with their mental health and help prevent more lives being lost to suicide.
Both Anasta and Foran’s lives have sadly been touched by suicide and mental health challenges, and they want to normalise conversations about mental health among men to encourage others to seek help. Both Anasta and Foran open up about their experience with mental health, stigma and difficulties men face when speaking out, and the role that exercise can play in maintaining good mental health. You can read more about their stories here.

Better Off With You unpacks the warning signs that men should look out for that their mental health might be struggling, providing evidence-based advice on the actions they can take to find support for themselves or a mate who might be at risk of suicide.

It shares practical tools to help men check in with their mates and themselves, to get ahead of issues before they become bigger problems and take meaningful steps towards better mental health.

Here on the forums, we want to keep the conversation going and will be sharing some lived experience videos across the next week from men who’ve been through tough patches and found ways through. They share what helped, what didn’t, and the small steps that made a big difference.

Be sure to check back here, but in the meantime, you can check out the campaign videos and resources here.

@Bunniekins @Ru-bee @ENKELI @DownMoreThanUp

not a rugby fan either

something about a Barassi line …lol

am Aussie enough to remember my father mentioning it in Sydney when the rugby fans were being very loud across the street. I was about 9.

but I do have mad rugby mum in my street. Daughter keeps getting black eyes and broken noses but plays for top team

@Appleblossom I had heard the name Ron Barassi before but thought he was an AFL footballer. Oops wrong code! 🤣

I saw this by a Dr Glenn Doyle and wondered what you think of it? 💛
CPTSD is not a mental illness. It is an injury.
Words matter.
CPTSD does not just happen. It is inflicted.
It is not inherited. It is inflicted.
It is not “caught.” It is inflicted.
We don’t heal CPTSD by pretending we’re “fine.”
That’s a recipe for making CPTSD much, much worse.
We recover from CPTSD the way we recover from a physical injury: we learn where and when and how to give our nervous system rest, and where and when and how to apply gentle pressure to strengthen it.
CPTSD is not a synonym for “crazy.”
Survivors recovering from PTSD do not benefit from stigma.
We are psychological athletes training to realistically get back in the game.

@ENKELI Lol.. I must be older than you..lol…way before A replaced the V in VFL.

my Aussie side doesn’t come out to play much, but its buried deep inside. Lol

@heartathome I think the CPTSD Label can be a better lens to view personal struggles and helpful to access services and is far less pathologising than the other labels from the DSM. I accept it for myself.

I've been loving reading the conversations that have been going on here.

To keep things going I wanted to share Fabian's story next:

“Talk to someone. Talk to whoever you have to. Once you get it out, it’s so much easier”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4BI-aqjqjA

You can read Fabian's story here.

Fabian speaks to how important it was for him to talk to those around him, and how it felt easier once he was able to open up. I'm wanting to hear from you guys: Have you had a similar experience when you were able to talk more openly about your mental health?

What was something that helped you to feel able or ready to have that first conversation?

Re: NRL greats Braith Anasta and Kieran Foran throw their support behind SANE’s Better Off With You campaign

Absolutely @Ru-bee . For the first year of therapy I couldn't open up and talk. I did have a journal though and used to give him a part of my journal to read but didn't want to talk about what I'd written. It was the only way I could communicate about my feelings at the time. It was the first time I had spoken about feelings. I knew sad, mad and glad. That much I knew. I've come a long way from 26 years ago. I still speak to my therapist monthly. I've always found support on here although my brain tells me that no one likes me. I know it's not true and I have to confront that 13-year-old rebellious child within at times! Talking to people who understand and have a lived/ living experience makes all the difference in the world! This internet forum is a new chapter in my journey and so far, so good, thanks to everyone's kindness! I feel like I've found my tribe! Sorry I've rambled on. Thanks for the tag! 😁💛
