Do you struggle to shower too?

Do you struggle to shower too?

This never use to be an issue for me. I had always been a shower every day type person, even through some really challenging times with my mental health.

But this year has been so different. It’s been a real struggle to get myself in the shower. I feel so disgusted with myself that I have allowed my personal hygiene to get so bad.

I watched a TikTok earlier this year that has stayed with me. Basically a woman absolutely blasting this person with mh issues over the fact that she only showers twice a week. And the comments were horrendous too.

Today’s the longest I’ve been, I won’t say how long cause I am so absolutely ashamed of myself. Tomorrow I have to though. I. Have. Too.

wondering if others who have struggled with this might share some tips and tricks?

Hi @Bow, you are definitely not alone with these struggles. Various possible reasons come to my mind that may have led to or be part of why I struggle to have more than couple showers a week in winter, more often in summer.

various things starting with being raised in house without a shower and a bath was only once a week up to current times where I have no heating in my bathroom.

When my MH is bad is nothing unusual for it to be mid day or after before I get around to getting a shower.

as part of a falls presentation presentation I attended there was mention of placing towels on bathroom floor before having a shower, this preventing tiles getting wet and risk of slipping. I suffer from claustrophobia also, am thankful shower in my new place has good amount of space. showering with towel/s on the floor and shower door open?? Just a thought

Thank you everyone.

I actually managed to shower today, mainly cause I have events on over the weekend and I was feeling pretty gross. I managed an everything shower. Shaved. Hair. And used a good amount of body scrub. I feel amazingly fresh! If only that was enough to get in the shower more often.

@Bow this is something i struggle greatly with that and brushing my teeth the longest I have gone recently without a shower was over 5 months and 3 for brushing my teeth I am always super embarrassed about it because I hate feeling so gross all the time but I just can’t manage to do it more often and I am pretty sure the only reason i managed last time was because I was manic so who knows when it will be again my psychologist thinks this is because of my negative symptoms from schizoaffective disorder I used to shower daily but the last several years it has just been slowly getting worse and worse idk what to do to make it better I have tried everything but nothing seems to work. I always feel bad when someone is making fun of someone with bad hygiene who is clearly mentally ill because people really don’t understand how hard it is.

Re: Do you struggle to shower too?

Yes, yes I do too. It’s not that I’m unhygienic it just feels like a huge mountain I need to climb just to get in the shower. It’s not just showering though, some tasks around the house feel like they too are a trek up Everest!

I get over them sometimes by remembering an acronym I was taught in therapy once and it goes “ATOM” Action Turns On Motivation! And I tell you what, it works most of the time. Once I actually get going with whatever task it is I need to do it doesn’t feel anywhere near as hard as my mind was making it out to be!

But back to the showing, I’m kind of glad I’m not the only one who is going through this!

All of the above too @Bow. There is so much more than just getting in. I don’t think people realise the pressure and the stress involved.
