All Things Sport...

All Things Sport...

There are many threads dedicated to sharing experiences - good times and not so good - so I thought I would start a thread for those on here who love their sport. For me - and I suspect for some others - sport is a good distraction as it often blocks out the more negative emotions and helps to avoid triggers that many other things in 'life' so often seem to do.

This thread can also be a place where like-minded (and not so like-minded people @utopia @Former-Member @Zoe7 lol) can 'discuss/debate' their respective competitions in their preferred sport(s).

For those that are definitely NOT into sport @Phoenix_Rising for example - avoid this thread at all costs - whoops just tagged you in..........hahaha!!!!!

Hi there @Former-Member @Zoe7 @MDT @Eve7 @Shaz51 @WIP and all sports fans!

What a wonderful night it has been in the world of tennis! First Dylan Alcott wins and then Ash Barty follows up and wins her final! Talk about a party for the Aussies! I didn't watch the match as I was waiting to pick my housemate up from hospital but I was following along on the Wimbledon live page and all I can say is talk about emotional! When it went to a tiebreak in the 2nd set, I got worried as Pliskova looked good and then it went into a third and that was all on. I really hope CD Ash could do it being up 3-0 on the third as I thought it might go similar to the 1st set so I was so proud when she finally did win! Such a brilliant young player yet such a special and wonderful Aussie! What makes it extra special is the fact that it was 50 years since her hero won Wimbledon and it was also NAIDOC week here in Australia so there are plenty of reasons to have a Barty Party!

As for Dylan Alcott, playing tennis for me is a challenge at the best of times as I'm such a bad player skills wise yet for him to do it in a wheelchair, that takes extra skills and brilliance l! He has inspired so many young people in wheelchairs to take up the sport and I like that he states that he is just like anyone else except that his legs don't work. He really has tried to change the way people see disabilities and I'm so proud of him for whet he has done and achieved in tennis and in life in general. Now, let's hope he can win gold in the Paraolympics and then finish up with the trophy at the US Open in the form of the golden slam as the media is calling it.

As for Brisbane Lions, what happened? Did they get stage fright at being at Metricon Stadium away from their home ground of the Gabba? Do we have another Richmond on our hands where they can only win at the MCG and not at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne? Let's hope we can improve in the weeks to come!

All I can say is last night at Wimbledon was certainly very special and one I think I'll remember for a long time to come for many different reasons. Talk about inspirational in many ways.

Keep on cheering for your teams sports fans and I hope they all win!

@Judi9877 Being 50 years since Yvonne won her first Wimbledon final makes it just a bit more special with Ash being so close to her. Ash is such a wonderful example to everyone of both a persistent sportsperson and also a perfect role model as an exceptional human being. She is my absolute favourite sportsperson - not just for everything she brings to the sport but for the person she is.

As for our Lions - disappointing The did not seem to be in the game from the beginning. There were several times that our hardest players did not go hard as they usually do and that was a clear indication that they were not at their best. We will see next week what they are really made of - hopefully yesterday's game was just a blip on the radar and they can bounce bag next week. It will be interesting to see how they go against Richmond at the MCG next Friday - especially how Richmond have been going too - they will have a lot to prove, as we will. Hopefully Lester and T. Berry will be back - we certainly need them.

@Eve7 Just finished watching Dylans match that I recorded last night. Such a champion

It does however annoy me that his game was not live and had to be seen as a replay (on free to air tv) - no equality at all and to me that is not okay

Re: All Things Sport...

I agree @Zoe7 as I'm sure if shown live it would have received great ratings.

Re: All Things Sport...

No doubt @Eve7 Such a wonderful ambassador for tennis (in any form) and he should be both celebrated and admired for not just his tennis ability but for all he does for the sport. We certainly celebrate our sportspeople most in Australia but to me it is another example of just how unequal we do celebrate people in our country. Yes sport is massive here but when it comes down to it it is just a game (or event) - if we treated our scientists for example the same then how much more money and breakthroughs to treat people with illnesses/diseases would we have - some times I really think we have our priorities so warped. I know that sport makes people (collectively) happy and engaged in things they love but wouldn't it be nice if the same money was put into things that could actually cure so many diseases ...or in our case here - for services to help with MH.

Re: All Things Sport...

I've no idea why we idolise sportspeople the way we do @Zoe7 and I agree we should be celebrating our scientists and healthcare workers.

Unfortunately, sport brings in big $$ and that is probably the bottom line. Maybe if we had healthbet as big as sportsbet we might see more equality in funding etc. The only reason the Olympic Games are going ahead is because of the $$ involved...mega millions.

I don't think things will change anytime soon.

Re: All Things Sport...

Totally agree @Eve7 👍

The olympics is going to lose money this year - tourism brings so much to the city/country hosting but that will not happen this year.

I also find it annoying for those in sport that have complained about lack of funding for themselves - how about getting life in perspective and think about the lack of funding for our homeless or the meager amount our nurses make - some really need a reality check.

Re: All Things Sport...

Tourism doesn't bring in as much to the host country / city as advertising and media @Zoe7 Then add to that the amount made by gambling and tourism is way behind. It's corrupt and the whole event management of the IOC needs a complete overhaul.

I also think we should be honouring our educators, people like you who give so much over and above to educate our current generation of young people.
