The Physiological Sigh

The Physiological Sigh

Today's contribution to this forum chat is a quick nervous system reset—let's do it together...

This is a regulation tool I use regularly that's genuinely helped me, called The Physiological Sigh

Here's how to do it:

  • 2 sharp inhales through your nose (feel your belly expand)
  • 1 long, slow exhale through your mouth

That's it. Takes about 5 seconds.

What I notice in my own body - This specific breathing pattern signals my system to downshift. It activates the vagus nerve and basically tells your nervous system "we're safe enough to regulate right now."

When I use it:

  • Before conversations that matter
  • Between back-to-back client meetings
  • When I notice my system ramping up
  • At night when my mind won't settle
  • In the car before going into public spaces

Look, our bodies learned to stay alert for good reasons... but we don't need that anymore!

What regulation tools actually work for you?

Re: The Physiological Sigh

Such a good post @ccau_82- It's something I'm working on. I'll be the first to admit I'm shocking when it comes to slowing down, but these sorts of regulation tools are doing wonders for my nervous system. I'm also trying to be mindful of my pace; Walk, talk, eat & drinking slower!

@Oaktree @S1TREP @Magpie22 @MatchaToad @Lapis_Anteater @BecomingOkay I wonder if you have any regulation tools you could share that works well for you?

Re: The Physiological Sigh

Ooh @ccau_82 it really works. Amazing

For me I have a few things I try

- just slow breaths - counting in, holding and releasing

- I distract myself by thinking of other things - counting, remembering all the US states or countries

- imagining a warm ball of light moving through my body. I breathe in and picture a warm ball of light coming into my chest and then move it down to my feet and back up again as I breathe
