Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

Hello

Hello

I am new here. I'm feeling suffocated and trapped. I figured out not long ago that I have NSSI (non-suicidal self-injury) and I told a couple of my friends. They chewed me out for bringing up sensitive topics, so I came here. I'm genderfluid, asexual and possibly something else (still figuring that one out, lol). Whenever I bring up the LGBTQIA+ community, my family acts... really weird. Like, neither entirely homophobic, but not entirely supportive. My dad also has this really condescending way of talking, like every breath I take is the wrong one. Anyway, my parents don't think I need therapy so I came here to talk to someone. Also, my parents don't know about a lot of this. Could someone try and help me?

Hey there @TheRealLoki

I just wanted to pop by to welcome you to the forums. It's great that you have reached out tonight for some support around your struggles with self-harm and better understanding your identity. I encourage you to check out the welcome thread here if you haven't yet and would like to introduce yourself a bit more to the community.

It can be really difficult to talk about these topics and it takes great courage. You did the right thing to open up to your friends for support, but it's possible that they might not feel equipped or comfortable to talk about these struggles you're facing. It also sounds like your parents don't know too much about this, and that they have reacted oddly to LGBTQIA+ community or topics in the past. It's understandable then if you might not feel comfortable opening up to them.

However, it's important that you do still get the support that you need, and that hopefully the members here will be able to offer you. Please know that therapy can also be a great means of one-on-one support to explore, and it's suitable for everyone. There are free, online services available such as Beyond Blue, SANE's support line and Lifeline.

We hope that you're enjoying exploring the platform tonight, and the community is here for you!

Re: Hello

Hi @TheRealLoki ,

Only just seen your post, sorry for a much delayed response.

I'm sorry your friends were not open to you discussing your struggles and did not offer you support. ☹️ I'm also sorry your family are not accepting and open about LGBTIQ+ topics.

I'm glad you have reached out here though, because both topics are absolutely OK to talk about 🥰 and seek support for.

I used to NSSI many years away as a way to express my internal distress which I didnt feel able to share with others.

Do you know what triggers your feelings for want/need to engage in NSSI? Do you know what "need" it fulfills?

(I ask because for me this was the key to figuring out how to replace it with someone else)
