Welcome and getting started

Advice in supporting my sister.

Advice in supporting my sister.

Hi!,

I am new to all this, but I was seeking help with supporting my sister, who has recently accepted that she has a problem with alcohol.

what I seek is help in knowing what to say and what not to? She is coming to visit me in a few days to stay, rest, and catch up.

She has reached out to my other sister, (who lives near her).

That sister has filled me in on certain details, like that she is drinking every day, and basically, when she isn't at work, she is drunk.

She is the sensible sister, the organised, levelheaded, always does the right thing, only her life has become unmanageable...affectionately known as straighty 180 as she's known as...goody two shoes....in effect, the good daughter.

So, this has come out of left field, she's hidden it well for a long time my other sister has told me, a

This pending visit is like a getaway for her.

She is on medication, I am told it's to suppress her need to drink, these meds she is only just getting used too.

I'm scared I will make her feel ill at ease, say the wrong thing, make her feel judged, when all I really want to do is love her and be here for her.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Advice in supporting my sister.

Hey @Dish1964 ,

Thank you opening up and sharing. I can see your sister is doing what she can.

With any addiction and challenges with alcohol, one of the most helpful is to empower the person to WANT to change.

Often, this can be a consideration of looking at what their life goals are, or what they want their ideal like to look like.

Have you heard about the stages of change?

Which stage do you think your sister is at, at the moment?

I can see how much you care about her. Be there for her, acknowledge her effort and progress, and let her know you care.

All the best. Hope to hear how things go.
