@DownMoreThanUp oh I just love this song and what it represents.
The story behind the song (which you may already know so apologies if I'm repeating)
The Inspiration Behind the Song
- Personal Struggle: The title track from the Burn the Ships album was inspired by Luke Smallbone's wife, Courtney. During her second pregnancy, she suffered from severe nausea, which led to a dependence on prescription medication and a subsequent mental health hospitalization.
- The Turning Point: After completing outpatient therapy, Courtney chose to flush her remaining pills down the toilet as a powerful, symbolic act to free herself from guilt and shame.
- The Historical Analogy: Witnessing his wife flush the pills reminded Luke of the famous historical account of Spanish commander Hernán Cortés. When Cortés and his men landed in the New World, the men were terrified and wanted to retreat to the safety of their familiar, albeit stinky, ships. Cortés ordered the ships burned so his crew had no option to turn back—they had to commit completely to the new land.
Good for you in stepping forward my darling brother, you're in my prayers.
PS the new album, The Most Beautiful Colours, is available at Koorong 💜🫂
