@Taali my grandfather could play by ear. He'd hear a song and get his piano accordion out and play away.

I also dated a guy who could hear the beginning of a song and pick it up. I was so envious!

I studied music and the Music Conservatory when it was still part of the WA Academy of Performing Arts and only passed because the lecturer felt sorry for me. I can't read music.

Mum always wanted me to have piano lessons but we were too poor. I wonder if I'm too old to learn now...

Well I have lived with 2 marvellous musicians who both begged me not to try to sing !!!!

@Taali ba ha ha ha ha! I was 18 and was singing along with some other friends when one of them asked "What happened to the $5 we gave you?"

I said "what $5?"

He replied "The $5 we gave you for singing lessons!"

I think we are probably wonderful singers, the rest of the world just don't know how to appreciate our talents! 🤣🤣🤣

Hearing you about the cost of lessons. I didn't have many paid for, possibly why I am so aaaavvvverage. lol I got through on the smell of an oily rag, and paid for lessons as a young adult to catch up... kinda...

Its good to laugh, but many people can learn later in life. Basic keyboard skills can open up the singing experience as a healthy connecting experience, not isn't she purrffektomundo!

@Appleblossom my problem is that I can not understand music. I struggle trying to work out which key is what. I had to have the keys written on a piece of card when I played the piano at my aunts' farm. It's like I have music-blindness!

There are more visual learners and those who are learn more by ear.

There are also too many stories of weird brilliance and talent, which I think people compare themselves to, and it inhibits their ability to gain the skills.

Being able to know what key a piece is in is actually a sophisticated skill. Then there is chord recognition and the old puuurrrfekt pitch. To me that just said, someone grew up in a stable environment with a decent piano or other instruments.
