Talking through trauma and PTSD

A lifetime of pain

A lifetime of pain

Bare with my while I share this, my brain is flooded with thoughts so things might be a bit messy with how they are written.

TW: Disclosure of abuse (SA), suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

Content/trigger warning

From a young age I was exposed to being physically and sexually abused, combine that with the emotional abuse and it's left me with lifelong trauma. I was made to believe it was my fault, that it wasn't that bad, that it didn't matter and that I shouldn't talk about it. These incidents happened while I was in a Christian school, at different ages by different aged groups of men some my age at the time being 9 years old others being older than me, there were students, teachers, strangers that I didn't know. It never seemed to end, it went on for years with no indication that it was ever going to stop, how was I to get myself out of this, who would listen, who would believe me when my voice didn't matter. It only ended when I left school, I had to, I couldn't stay there, I couldn't keep being hurt.

Fast forward a while and I found relationships but I wasn't looking for a partner but rather a father figure something I had lacked all my life. This lead to being further abused as I sought out men that were considerably older than me, wanting to felt cared for, to feel safe but instead I was hurt. So I escaped one lot of abuse only to continue to experience another, was this all my life was going to be like, was this what I deserved, was this just normal?

All my life I've sought friendships that have been of varying age groups for different reasons. Younger friends to feel as though I had siblings to grow up with and so that i still felt like i had a childhood, older friends so that I felt like I had an auntie or a mother figure that cared and wanted to protect me. Now I find myself alone with only a couple of friends that I communicate with but none that I can physically see due to the distance between us.

Come to today and life's still in shambles, there's still ongoing abuse by various people including a family member. I've been seeking help, trying to learn to live with a lifetime full of trauma, trying to make sense of why it's been like this. It's not easy, trying to find someone that truly understands what I've been through, why I'm the way I am and to then be able to help me to recover if that's at all entirely possible.

I'm grateful that I'm still here given others have tried to fatally hurt me, then there's the attempts of ending my own life. But it's a struggle, flashbacks are triggered by the simplest of things, a word, a smell or taste, a sound, a name it can be anything and it can hit without warning, they can last minutes, hours or even days. I've used self harm to cope throughout my life and still do as it's the one thing I can control when everything else is spiralling around me. I know it's not healthy and I've tried to find other alternatives, sometimes I'm lucky and something will work for a while but then it stops and it's back to square one.

Anyway I think that's enough for now, I'm sorry for the long read and if it's confusing. Thanks for reading and I'm glad I'm here, this community seems to be amazing and supportive so thankyou to everyone I've talked to so far.

You are not a burden @RebelliousAngel !! You are going through a hard time! I wish I could do something to help! Whats your dog's name? Do you have a photo of him/ her? What type of dog is it? I love animals probably more than I like people. They are loving and loyal babies! Do you watch TV or listen to music while you're feeling down? 💚

Re: A lifetime of pain

@heartathome I cannot share any details about my animals as it would jeopardise my safety. I watch TV and have music to listen to, I do not like when it is quiet as I find my head and thoughts get louder.

Re: A lifetime of pain

That's fine about the animals! I don't like the quiet as well @RebelliousAngel . I start to think on things that I could do without. I listen to old music most of the time. I like to get out most days as my unit is very small. I went and got some photocopies for the meeting this afternoon and had a coffee up town. I like having someone to talk to and am missing someone who has disappeared off the forum recently. I'm really sad about that! I've been watching but not replying to other's atm, apart from you. I will engage when someone tags me.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@heartathome it is hard when people disappear but it may be that they are taking a break. Thanks for chatting to me, it has helped to not feel alone. Getting out is good if your unit is small. I bet it was nice to have a coffee while you were out.

Re: A lifetime of pain

I feel lonely some days but usually I fill my mornings with chores and in the afternoon I’m tired. @heartathome Like a relatively free morning occasionally. Did lots of chores this morning and napped for 3 hours too after only 4 hours sleep. Still tired. Rarely venture out in the afternoons never in the evenings. Hate driving at night.

Re: A lifetime of pain

@RebelliousAngel I really think it is bad anyone said or implied that people who have experienced a trauma load that you have mentioned, cannot be fixed. Please don’t believe it. I know the feelings of worthlessness and invisibility that come with childhood sexual abuse. You are not a burden. I hope in time you can feel that. I have found many body based therapies helpful and physical movement and meditation and journaling.

I am also believer in cat and nature therapy.

Re: A lifetime of pain

I'm so glad @heartathome was online this morning to chat with you @RebelliousAngel 😊.

Like Heart and @GezzaP i certainly get lonely at times too, and is part of why I first joined the forum.

My cold came on quite strong yesterday and the fatgiue with it has floored me. Spent yesterday and today in bed (except for health appointments). Can you believe that - I took a full day of sick leave today! I tried working 2 hours from home yesterday and was exhausted, so today I chose (battled with myself) to put myself first and take the whole day off, rather than try to do an hour or two of work knowing it would set my sickness back if i did.

Still very easily tired and have cold symptoms, but improving. Feel half-human at least, hence logging on whilst I have to be up and waiting for an appointment anyway.
