Talking through trauma and PTSD

A lifetime of pain

A lifetime of pain

Bare with my while I share this, my brain is flooded with thoughts so things might be a bit messy with how they are written.

TW: Disclosure of abuse (SA), suicidal ideation, and self-harm.

Content/trigger warning

From a young age I was exposed to being physically and sexually abused, combine that with the emotional abuse and it's left me with lifelong trauma. I was made to believe it was my fault, that it wasn't that bad, that it didn't matter and that I shouldn't talk about it. These incidents happened while I was in a Christian school, at different ages by different aged groups of men some my age at the time being 9 years old others being older than me, there were students, teachers, strangers that I didn't know. It never seemed to end, it went on for years with no indication that it was ever going to stop, how was I to get myself out of this, who would listen, who would believe me when my voice didn't matter. It only ended when I left school, I had to, I couldn't stay there, I couldn't keep being hurt.

Fast forward a while and I found relationships but I wasn't looking for a partner but rather a father figure something I had lacked all my life. This lead to being further abused as I sought out men that were considerably older than me, wanting to felt cared for, to feel safe but instead I was hurt. So I escaped one lot of abuse only to continue to experience another, was this all my life was going to be like, was this what I deserved, was this just normal?

All my life I've sought friendships that have been of varying age groups for different reasons. Younger friends to feel as though I had siblings to grow up with and so that i still felt like i had a childhood, older friends so that I felt like I had an auntie or a mother figure that cared and wanted to protect me. Now I find myself alone with only a couple of friends that I communicate with but none that I can physically see due to the distance between us.

Come to today and life's still in shambles, there's still ongoing abuse by various people including a family member. I've been seeking help, trying to learn to live with a lifetime full of trauma, trying to make sense of why it's been like this. It's not easy, trying to find someone that truly understands what I've been through, why I'm the way I am and to then be able to help me to recover if that's at all entirely possible.

I'm grateful that I'm still here given others have tried to fatally hurt me, then there's the attempts of ending my own life. But it's a struggle, flashbacks are triggered by the simplest of things, a word, a smell or taste, a sound, a name it can be anything and it can hit without warning, they can last minutes, hours or even days. I've used self harm to cope throughout my life and still do as it's the one thing I can control when everything else is spiralling around me. I know it's not healthy and I've tried to find other alternatives, sometimes I'm lucky and something will work for a while but then it stops and it's back to square one.

Anyway I think that's enough for now, I'm sorry for the long read and if it's confusing. Thanks for reading and I'm glad I'm here, this community seems to be amazing and supportive so thankyou to everyone I've talked to so far.

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hey @RebelliousAngel

I was thinking of you and just read through since I last checked in.

I hope you're getting some sleep, please know that I'm thinking and praying for you.

You are a beautiful person and I know you may not feel it right now, I know it may feel rotten and terrifying and sad all at the same time. I know that the voices of everything we have been taught can be really loud. But you know what I also know? You are stronger than you believe.

You are an amazing human being just for existing. You defied the odds. You have overcome. You are so much more than what everyone has done to you. You showed everyone who has ever hurt you, abused you or mistreated you that you intrinsically believe you are worth more than what they do, say or think about you. Just. By. Existing.

You have nothing to apologise for, you are taking care of you.

you are important to so many of us, including me, though I do apologise for being absent... seeing what you've been going through I'm sorry for not being there, though I'm so so thankful you haven't been alone.

You are so resilient to keep trying to access support, I am so proud of you for that!

I know what it's like to be told that "you're too hard" and "we can't treat you because that's too complicated". It kind of reinforces what we've always been told, that we're too complicated.

But we're not. It just means that we survived hell and made it out. It means that we have PhDs in survival and they only have Masters in treatment. They aren't qualified enough to treat us, not that we're too damaged to be treated.

You are so beautiful and I hope and pray that at least some of what I've written has helped ease this burden tonight.

💜

Re: A lifetime of pain

@Chasingsunsets I am feeling a little better today. I did a few things yesterday to try and help me feel more comfortable in my space.

I am finding myself lost as to what Ideas to try to get myself out of this period. It is unusual for me to be stuck for this long. I am hoping that things are slowly turning around given that I'm feeling a little better today.

I appreciate the support you have been giving me, thanks 🩵.

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hey @avant-garde, thanks for the support and prayers 🩵.

Your words have truly touched me in many ways. There's many things I needed to hear that you have written even if I can't believe them yet.

You don't have to apologise for being absent, I have not been on as much myself but I am working on staying connected and seeking support rather than shutting down and trying to cope alone.

I am feeling a little better today and I hope that it's the start for things turning around.

I hope you all is going wonderful for you hun 🩵

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hey @RebelliousAngel, lovely to hear from you again, it’s really great to hear that you were able to do a few more things yesterday and that you are feeling a bit better today.

We are all here to help bounce ideas off too 😊. For a sometime now I had been wondering if you had considered a counsellor or psychologist that you could go to in your area? I know this is harder said than done but if you could find the right fit for you it would mean in really challenging times, they would know you and your story (so you wouldn’t have to repeat it) and hopefully you would have created some sort of trust with them. Anyway of course it would be up to you but that thought kept coming back in my head time and time again so thought I’d share when the time was right. 😊

What are you up to today?

Re: A lifetime of pain

Hey @Chasingsunsets I have a counsellor that I speak to, I don't find that it's helpful as my trauma is very complex. I would like to find more appropriate support but there is barriers to me doing so.

Today I became one with my lounge and watched TV.

How has the day been for you?

Re: A lifetime of pain

Good evening @RebelliousAngel, sorry that your counsellor isn’t very helpful re trauma stuff. I hope that you will be able to find more appropriate support at a time right for you as I hear it would be so helpful in these times 💚

The couch sounds relaxing!! I haven’t done a lot today, Indi pulled up with a sore eye yesterday evening so I took her to the vets today, has a small scratch, she’s done something similar before so eye drops three times a day. Did a load of washing and some sorting. That’s about it 😊

Re: A lifetime of pain

@Chasingsunsets It would be helpful to have support and someone that can help with complex trauma. It is hard to live with things such as flash backs, panic/anxiety attacks, dissociation when I don't have support or the skills to cope with them. I have done my best to research things and worked on different strategies but it doesn't feel like they help.

I hope that Indi's eye is better soon, it's not nice when our animals are sick or injured. That's fantastic that you got a load of washing done and some sorting.

Do you have anything planned for tomorrow?

Re: A lifetime of pain

I definitely hear what you are saying @RebelliousAngel, it makes total sense, sometimes the missing link is the therapist in the room to monitor us, challenge us or reassure us/ regulate us. (esp when it’s trauma stuff)
We do the best we can, we have the lived experiences but we aren’t the paid trained therapist. Even therapists have therapists and they read a lot and have a degree in the field 😊
I think it’s amazing all the work you have done and there is no failure in all you have read and researched, perhaps it’s about getting curious of the next step or that missing link to change the movement?
All your research can really make it clearer on what therapist you might look for when you are ready perhaps so lots of positives re research ☺️

I am wondering what you have learnt or found interesting without triggering you etc 😊 or we can leave that until another time.

Yeah I hope her eye improves soon she hates the drops and knows when they are coming 😞. She’s a tough girl, I keep reminding her she’ll be fine soon. She gets very clingy when she doesn’t feel well.

Tomorrow I’m back to the grind, doesn’t feel like I’ve had enough days off! 🫠

How about you what are you up to tomorrow?
