Reaching out to Legacy

Reaching out to Legacy

Hey Shoulder to Shoulder: Veteran Families,

There comes a time when family members like my mother may need to reach out for a little extra support. Legacy is there to provide that support and help her through the emotional period and help navigate being widow. Dad, who was in the Navy for 16.5 years, unfortunately passed away last November and mum has found the adjustment challenging.

Support is something that everyone could consider if life is presenting unforeseen challenges. I'm really proud of her reaching out because she has been putting on a brace face and being strong for my sister and I.

Has anyone had an experience like this with Legacy that you wouldn't mind sharing? It's new to me and I am curious how things might go for mum, though I am confident that she will be supported.

I'd also love to hear anything you'd like to share about other services Legacy provides that other Members might be interested in too!

Here is the link to Legacy if anyone wants to reach out: https://www.legacy.com.au/how-we-help/who-we-help/

Take care

RiverSeal

Re: Reaching out to Legacy

Sorry @RiverSeal

I don't have any personal experiences with Legacy but I know that they are great.

I am sure your Mum will be supported by them. Sorry I can't be more helpful

Sorry about your dad @RiverSeal

I haven’t used Legacy but I also have heard great things from those who have. There’s also War Widows Guild which is called something else now…. That’s right Families of Veterans Guild.

Re: Reaching out to Legacy

I think there is a difference in reaching out depending on your individual needs. Legacy and the legatees seem to be geographically individual with services and offerings differing from club to club. For more formal support there is a central advocacy group that handle big things.

Re: Reaching out to Legacy

@RiverSeal Thanks, somehow didn’t get tag, and only saw this thread cos I was looking over this space in the forum. Dem putas aren’t purrfect.

I proudly identify as a Legacy girl. There were 3 main areas I gained benefit. I actually mentioned them to my son, this week. Coincidence it’s a topic of discussion. Paying respects to any positives in my life and family history.

1. We went to the Legacy building in the city for free dental. I appreciated good dental care and education.

2. I went to a dairy farm for 4 years as a young teen through Legacy. Those returned vets who bought into the soldier settlement scheme were then giving back and supporting the kids of their dead mates. As I was inner city mostly, I really appreciated the groundedness of learning about country life. It was hard yakka, and they liked me being a good influence on their younger child, who showed me the ropes in the herringbone dairy. Yeah up early to get the cows and all that, plus lots of farm labour. I don’t begrudge the cheap labour as I learned a lot, that sustained me later in life.

3. They gave mother money. A fellow visited regularly, dropped it off, and developed a connection with my brother over drawing and art, and got us a broken television which we fixed, and they also helped with getting carpet off cuts which we made suitable for our lounge room.

GRATEFUL.

@Oaktree @Magpie22 @LG and all…

🙏🍎

Re: Reaching out to Legacy

I love that @Appleblossom sounds like you really you really benefited from the farm and the skills you learnt later in life. It sounds like a lot of fun going to the farm and amazing they could do that to suport the children.

Sorry you didn't get tagged and I'm glad you found the post!

Take care

Re: Reaching out to Legacy

It depends on how old your mum is. My experience with Legacy hasn’t been great with teenage children. For social support if your mum is an older lady they seem good but I don’t think they do much otherwise
