NSW Garden of Remembrance

Hey Shoulder to Shoulder: Veteran Families,

Thanks for being part of this community where we can all come together and support each other with our experiences of being family members of a Veteran!

I just wanted to share and start a discussion for any other family members who may have been through something similar or are going to go through losing a loved one in the future. My father was in the Navy for 16.5 years and then worked as a civilian for over 10 years in various roles in the ADF. And in November last year he sadly passed away at home with his family by his side.

We were offered a memorial plaque in a few different places around Australia and we settled on the NSW Garden of Remembrance near Sydney. As dad was originally from Sydney and it is somewhere the family is more likely to go so we can visit dad's memorial plaque more frequently.

It was a lengthy period for the family to make a decision which was nice because it didn't feel rushed. And we had time to consider our options and all have a say as we live in different states and it's not easy to get together that often.

I hope to get to Sydney next year to visit friends and see some more sights as I love big cities and the hustle and bustle. I would love to take a picture for mum and frame it for her so she can see dad's memorial plaque in her home. And spend some time in such a beautiful garden and reflect on my time with my father.

I'm curious if anyone else has been through something similar or may be in the future? Please do share your experiences with the community!
