Living as a shut-in

Living as a shut-in

Hi I'm new here [name edited by moderator] and I lived majority of my life shut away and isolated from the world.

When I was younger I preferred it but now as I've gotten older I realise how much I've missed out on and how much it's impacted my mental health, physical health and relationships. It's gotten to the point I'm scared to go outside so I've been locked away in my room and I'm now ashamed of it. I know as my parents get older I need to step up and help financially but my fears hold me back everytime along with my physical limitations. I don't know why I came here I guess I wanted to tell someone of my situation rather than rotting away here in my room.

Welcome to the forum

@Tee35

I was isolated when I joined the forum and gradually “practised being social “. The online aspect can help, but it can take time for responses. I will tag a few people, but it can be good to also post on the general chat threads and get to know the people in the community.

@Tee35

Finding our own levels regarding solitude that is beneficial, and extroversion and sociability, is probably my journey in life.

I often try and support or like posts, but we seem to have an intermittent technical issue , where we get an orange flooded error message. Don’t take everything personally, sometimes it’s just the system.

I am doing chicken wings atm…

🍽️🥧can’t find a fitting emoji. Cheers

@Tee35 There is hope my friend, you do not have to rot in your room. You can overcome this situation and break free from your restrictions.

To overcome depression is about learning to understand how to hold onto the truth of who we truly are, and usually on how to let go of the loveless lies we believe about ourselves, often also lies about our neighbour, as the voices of depression have been telling us while down deepest, to keep us for themselves.

Depression always cuts us off, i found out the hard way suffering from a depressive illness, and painfully so. It sounds like depression is having this impact on you as well at the moment.

So firstly my friend be encouraged, things do not have to stay this way but you might have to learn to re-understand yourself, learning to heed 'voices' of truthful love, nurture and care, instead of the negativity that has been taking you captive in your room for so long. When we are ill we need loving care, but not to be isolated with our tormentors, as we depressed people so often are. (misunderstood and misunderstanding.)

This is a really good place to mingle safely with others suffering depression, some like me who have been struggling with a depressive illness most of their life, who could identify with you or perhaps even help you understanding what you are going through, and share how they are dealing with such times. Or point you to others who can support you there.

i know form experience how helpful it can be hear other people describe what you found difficult to bring to words for so long. Such has been helpful like anything overcoming the voices of those depressive demons.😀

Be of good courage.🤗

Hi @Appleblossom @Tee35 @DownMoreThanUp

Yes! I totallg agree. Before the forums, I totally kept to myself and hardly socialised. I had social anxiety. Bit by bit, on the forums, I could practise the social skills i'd learnt in theory, and then from the forums, take this practice into real life as transferrable skills.

So yes! I totally agree with you @Appleblossom

Re: Living as a shut-in

Hi @Tee35 😊 I have no diagnoses (?) but I often struggle to leave the house.I used to mail in letterbox 'in case someone sees me"

more recently I have taken to sleeping around the clock and showering every 3rd day

I did ever really have a social life - usual excuses..

  • friends got married and got own lives
  • career moves
  • fear
  • then later on ,me shifting where I live all over the place.

on a bad day my house likes like that hoarders show, on a good day, its just clutter, filth and unfinished projects

,,what am I going on about?

.. maybe I can relate to you and your position ,even in a lesser way (?)

I do manage to get things done if I really have to, but I avoid/have avoided lots of things that would be to my betterment well and make me feel better about myself

Good Luck, read around then join in

..who knows,we could all be shut-ins...🙂

..then if you felt up to it go for small walks at night or whatever. you might shock yourself. would feel better anyways. Night/early morning can be my part of the day as 'no one around)

Forgive me if none of this rings a bell.

Talking is good.Stick with it.

one last thing .. Why do you think being a shut-in is not normal ?? ..just a thought..

Laters..
