Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

I hate the nightmares

I hate the nightmares

Hi,

So my brother died last year by suicide. We were best friends, and it still isn't really *real* in an emotional sense that he's gone. Logically I know, but emotionally, he's just Elsewhere, but in a very non-religious way. He's away on holidays, or at work, or just Somewhere Else.

Anyway, I frequently dream about him, just as I frequently dream about other family and friends. However, sometimes I have nightmares where he's died. And these are the worst, because they're fundamentally not nightmares. I can wake up and know that no, what I dreamt isn't how he died - but he still died. That isn't a nightmare I can wake up from, but for that split-second upon waking, I have to go through that process of returning to reality, realising it was just a dream, but then remembering that the worst part of it *wasn't* just a dream. It's like dreaming that you're falling, waking up and realising it was just a dream that you were falling, but being in the process of falling out of bed.

Talking to my parents doesn't help - they mean well, but they're also still mourning his loss, and they became overly protective the last time I mentioned nightmares in general, so I just tell them I sleep fine now.

I just hate being alone with it, and on the days after the nightmares, his loss is Real again. It hurts, and there's no solution. Nothing will fix it. It just hurts.

I miss him.

Re: I hate the nightmares

hi there @Lostbookworm,

thank you for sharing, and i'm sorry to hear how painful this last year has been for you. feelings of grief and loss can manifest differently across individuals, and i can see how these nightmares would be really hard and overwhelming to deal with on your own.

your feelings are valid, it's absolutely okay to feel upset and hurt. there's no set timeline or 'one' way to process it, so please do take your time and know that there's a community here for you. when i lost a cousin to suicide, i felt i had all these unanswered questions and just a mix of emotions that took a bit longer to digest and work through. talking it through really helped me. i can see you tried with your parents, but it can be challenging when they're dealing with grief too. have you chatted to a grief counsellor or mental health professional before? services like Griefline might be able to provide further resources and support if you're interested.

sending you gentle hugs 💙

Thanks so much. II have a regular psychologist I talk to about it, and I've just finished a 15-week support programme through SANE. There's also a road trauma support group that runs every two months. It's just all the in-between times, nightmares, and unexpected triggers.

I've also just been assessed to see if I'm autistic, as well as starting a couple of new jobs and a PhD, and he's not there to talk to about any of it. Most of the time it's still Not Real, but days like this just hit hard.

Re: I hate the nightmares

@Lostbookworm i'm glad to hear that you've been reaching out and engaging with supports already!!

i know what you mean about wanting to talk through and share all these things with your sibling, i'm the same with my sister. thank you for sharing with us, and feel free to pop in and talk to the community here about what's been going on for you - i know it won't be the same as talking to your brother, but i hope it can help even a little. how are you finding the autism assessment process so far? and how's your PhD and new job going? that's a lot to juggle at once!

we have social chat threads on fri, sat & sun evenings in the forums - i'd love for you to join and share your life updates there too! i've also heard of people having a journal where they write to their lost loved ones as a way of coping too. whatever works for you, we're here 💙
