Can't remember my therapy sessions

Can't remember my therapy sessions

So, last therapy session I came across a topic that I find quite upsetting and I know I didn't talk much and my therapist did most of the talking. But the thing is, I can't really remember what was said. I can't really remember much after we touched on that topic.

Is this normal? Does this happen to anyone else when they talk about distressing things in therapy?

If I mention this to my therapist, is he going to make a big deal of it?

It's happened to me before. Especially when it was upsetting.

Does it make therapy pointless if I can't remember it?

Does it un-do the 'good' that therapy is supposed to be doing to me?

I really don't know. I know for me it comes back in small images after a while so I don't think it's a waste of time. But I would definitely talk to your therapist about something because something has touched a nerve big time and it might be something you may need to address numours times or could be something your not ready to deal with

Re: Can't remember my therapy sessions

@Former-Member It's really common, and for me it happens all the time. I've been with my psych long enough for her to know that there are some things she's going to have to go over and over like a broken record because the first time I hear it I'm either
a) not in a fit state to pay attention (too distressed),
b) preoccupied with other worries that I'm going to have to bring up, or
c) not well enough or progressed enough to hear what she's saying and take it on board.

I don't think it undoes the good of going; sure you might pay to hear the same thing again some time, but therapists are used to that (I guarantee they won't be offended).

Not sure about you, but I know in my therapy journey there are going to be things that I will need to be told time and time again, and each time I hear them will (hopefully) be a bit easier, less distressing, and I'll be better equipped to take it on board.

My advice would be to not be so hard on yourself. Pobody's nerfect, eh? 😉

Hello @Former-Member @AwkwardTurtle @Former-Member

It doesnt mean that anything is wrong, yes it does happen, usually a trigger blocking- self preservations - part of our patterned thinking

it is a good thing if you look at it from the point of view that you actually noticed your reaction. That is progress. Talk about what you noticed, felt, remember next visit. The more you talk about how you feel, react, remember, notice the clearer your thoughts will become. All part of therapy, healing.

You are doing well Diprotodon

take care
