Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

Overthinking

Overthinking

Suicide is a very common thought for me. I go down and overthink many, many things. Speaking with other people helps me.

Living alone is really hard and not having a "fall back" makes these thoughts arise often.

I just need some strategies to stop the overthinking.

Re: Overthinking

I am a chronic overthinker too @RedZebra - for better or worse lol! I also have a long history of thoughts of suicide too.

What has helped you so far when you get these thoughts?

What tends to happen when you overthink?

E.g. Are you too negative/critical/pessimistic? Do you get anxious and/or catastrophise? Do you question the point/meaning of everything?

Are there specific topics you know of that trigger you? Or just a random selection of things that crop up?

Thnx for your reply.

I find talking helps when I'm in this frame of mind but I end up with a counsellor. Validation helps.

I am also a long term suicide ideator, particularly during winter.

The overthinking leads to a great deal of anxiety about the future especially as I get older.

I generally know the answers ..... self love and caring, getting out to be social. Being present, keeping busy. Practicing these techniques is the hard part.

I am a loner.

Re: Overthinking

Hi @RedZebra I'm glad that you've been able to connect on the forums. It's good that you've been able to identify that talking and validation are what helps when you're in this frame of mind, hopefully the forums can provide you with both of these.

Have you explored overthinking with your counsellor before?

It is very true that knowing the steps to take and actually acting on them are very different things! I can definitely relate to that, and I think most others here will be able to as well. It's difficult because we can know all of these techniques and have a bunch of tools to help bring us out of dark places, but the times when we really need them are also the times when they're hardest to access. Even just reaching out here shows that you are taking some positive steps forward though, so good on you
