Managing relationships

When is enough enough?

When is enough enough?

As a senior with grown children, I guess I have a lot of time on my hands to”think” too much.

I was the older child of two, raised by two parents during the 50’s & 60’s, in what was relatively common in those days, an authoritative manner…..eg: as long as you are under my roof you will do as I say. Even as a 21 year old, in a committed relationship with a serviceman, we had the opportunity to marry and take up a very well paid posting overseas. The response from my mother was…..you can get married but you’re not going overseas! Nothing more to be said on that subject. That was the strictness of her parenting.

My boyfriend left the services and we married not long after. All good for several years……eventually we fulfilled my mum’s dream and made her a grandmother. As a grandmother, I couldn’t really fault her, always willing to help and babysit. Only issue was that my children were all perfect and any indiscretion must have been because I didn’t handle things properly.

Fast forward, by now we have 3 children and I swore I would never treat my daughter the same way……I encouraged her to try anything she wanted to……go to study in the country, pursue opportunities wherever they may be. My big mistake was probably not setting enough boundaries and trying to be a friend.

Since teen years there has been a complete lack of respect…….taking things from our room, resulting on us having to put locks on the doors. She lived most of her late teenage and early twenties either interstate or overseas.

To describe our relationship as like a roller coaster gives you some idea……we would go from besties, enjoying laugh, etc to all out face to face arguments where I might be ordered out of her house or hung up on to even the odd slap.

She married and has subsequently had 3 of her own children, who I absolutely adore. However, any relationship has to be totally on her terms and God help me if I don’t agree with her, oftentimes, unreasonable thoughts.

I may not hear from her for a while……but then the phone will ring…..hey Mum would you or Dad be able to do this for me. Which we always do…..but not anymore.

Just writing the above has cleared my head…….so to those that may read my post, I apologise for the “waffle”……however, I would welcome responses. Am I wrong or should I have put my foot down years ago? SS

Hi @Sadsenior

I just wanted to pop by to welcome you to the forums. It can be a very vulnerable thing to discuss our relationships and ask for guidance and input from others. It sounds as though you have already spent a great deal of time reflecting on this and I hope that posting here may offer a helpful outside perspective, I look forward to reading what the community has to share as I'm sure that many here can relate to your situation.

Take care

Re: When is enough enough?

Dear Sad Senior, I relate to your story as my mother had a strict upbringing in 1960s and raised her three kids with NO RULES. To the point we were constantly in trouble at school with ZERO respect for authority.

To directly answer your question, based from my own experience of being the "kid with power to affect mums feelings and treat her as a bad friend and fight with her" that it does come down to being given permission from her, all those formative years ago, to have a certain level of control and self authority in my life. It has been 'a thing' about me all my life, and at age 40 i can now see the same entitlement to power and precociousness in the tik-tokers who create problems in the workplace and show it on social media. They grew up watching mockeries on TV now they are doing the same thing.

However I would encourage you to try to recall the good times with your daughter, enjoy the two other kids, keep an open heart and, have you ever had any conversations after the conflicts?

Are there others in the family with insight? is your daughter overwhelmed with kids and housework etc, does the relationship need to change that you go to her house a few times a week and prove that you want to be in her life...BUT you won't tolerate getting abused and slapped etc. Maybe that will open the door for conversation.

My aunty has made some beautiful sentimental objects, photo books and frames from her family photos, new and old. She is over 60 and the kids have moved out but I know that my beautiful aunty lives with them in her mind, every day of her life and she makes the treasures to prove it. I love going to their house to see them, and I think, what a beautiful lady as she continues to make family memories even when separated by distance and time.

Re: When is enough enough?

Hello @Sadsenior I was brought up in an abusive and authoritarian family in the 60s and 70s. To try and make sense of why things were so wrong I would turn to books to understand myself. There is a book I wanted to recommend its called "Your Inner Child of the Past" by Hugh Missildine. Its a very old book the used versions are a lot cheaper on Amazon. It has lots of relevance in terms of dissecting parenting styles and why children turn out a certain way. It may be able to give you insights into your family instead of feeling like you may have failed as a parent and offer some valuable ideas. We do only what we know and what feels right to us. I don't think I would have been a good parent, I hesitate to say my offspring would have turned out the same way.

Thank you so much for responding to my plea. I will seek out the book you suggested. I will try anything to try and make sense of things at the moment. I have been placed on “give me space” time and at this age……it’s hard not to feel like my life has been a real waste. I guess w3 never know the answers. Thanks again. SS

Sugarshack, reading your response gives me a real sense of you really “get it”. My DD is about your age and yes she is busy with a business, family and a home to run and having been there, I understand those constraints. What I don’t understand is that I simply do not seem to be able to do anything to please her. I offer support with meals, helping out with the children, etc……alas it is always her MIL that these tasks are given to.

I would give my right arm to have a loving, caring relationship with my daughter…..but I’m tired of trying and think I must now start taking care of my own mental health. Thank you again. SS
